Thanks for highlighting this, watched it last night and thought it was brilliant. Woke up this morning still thinking about it.

Soundtrack still bangs. Not just The Shins, front-to-back it remains real nice. And I include Coldplay in that.

Watched Fish Tank last night, my first Andrea Arnold - loved it.

Thought it was pretty intoxicating with how uncomfortable it was, and that there was always this hope alongside looming dread.

Really regret suggesting The Nightingale for the TV’s all-female film club. (I hadn’t seen it yet).

Over the past couple of days I’ve watched:

Some Like It Hot - Only film from the batch that I hadn’t previously seen before but found it a real joy to watch. Imagine this would be really fun to see on stage too. Lots of genuinely funny moments and despite what I’ve read about behind the scenes antics, the cast look like their having a blast.

A Hard Day’s Night - The performances and the dizzying aspects of Beatlemania are pretty great but bar that it’s a bit daft tbh, like none of the stuff with Steptoe, Paul’s “clean” granddad really landed for me. The best stuff is when Ringo goes off for his melancholic sulk and causes some havoc in the pub.

Groundhog Day - Love this movie so much! Really like the journey through the highs and lows of living out the same day over and over again nor that it doesn’t totally shy away from what an asshole Phil can be. This song is going to be in my heads for weeks though:

Blue Velvet - Such a brilliant but nasty film that just doesn’t really lose its edge. Just chocked full of iconic moments fromthe discovery of the ear to Frank’s first huff to the look of pure horror on Sandy’s face when Dorothy reveals Jeffrey to be her lover.

Heineken over Blue Ribbon anydayyyy over the week!

I’m a huge Beatles fan but I don’t think I’ve ever managed to get through all of HDN or Help - something about how those kind of sixties comedies are paced, I just can’t stick it

Yeah the pacing makes it really drag and considering it’s only 90mins that shouldn’t really be the case. The humour just doesn’t really feel very natural and it doesn’t help that it feels like everyone is mumbling their lines. You could almost mute the dialogue and just turn it up again for the musical moments. Never gotten around to Help, although if it’s a spoof spy film surely it has a bit more plot than The Beatles need to go to a studio to rehearse for a TV performance…

I think I saw that Curzon are re-releasing Bong Joon Ho’s film Memories of Murder next month, so maybe a new DVD/Blu-Ray release is coming too?

Watched Apocalypse Now and mostly found it pretty excellent. I found everything after he arrived at the compound a bit silly though. Brando’s character was pretty much a Bond villain.
