It’s the opposite - thicker, drier wax is less likely to progress out of the ear canals and more likely to become impacted.

Not really aural hygiene, but im losing my battle with the old cauli ears, with a tiny bit of formation on the top of my left ear - though it is only really detectable if you look close (@wewerewerewolvesonce hows yours going)

Had my ears syringed once and it was amazing

My uncle once got a cotton bud stuck down his lughole and now no one in my family is allowed to use them

another thing about perforated eardrums is if you’ve ever had one, doctors/audiologists etc will be really wary of going near your ear for fear of it happening again (risk of liability i guess)

Yeah, you shouldn’t stick anything in your ear. The hairs in your ear should guide wax out and it’ll fall out naturally, however this doesn’t always work as wax consistency varies, as does hair density etc etc as you get older.

If your ears do get blocked, then a couple of drops of olive oil every night for a week should soften it up, or if it persists, some of the drops that also contain hydrogen peroxide will work, plus they make an amazing popping and fizzing sound as they get to work.

It’s one of those things that shouldn’t be enjoyable but somehow is.

Like decluttering your arse of winnets, rolling them into a superwinnet and flicking it behind the telly.

Touch wood but I don’t seem to get cauliflower ear. One of my team mates has been training for like half the time I have and has pretty serious cauliflower ear already where as one of our coaches has been training for like 9 years and is cauli free :man_shrugging:

yeah the (5%?) hydrogen peroxide stuff is much more effective for blockages but you need to be really careful not to overdo it as the peroxide can irritate your eardrum.

i have to wear earplugs at night at the moment because of a noisy housemate and it really bothers me because i imagine it’s not good for the wax situation

Some proper dirty-eared ghets ITT

it depends on the context when you are saying it I think.

Can’t remember the last time I cleaned my ears with an ear bud or similar. May stick a bic lid or kirby grip on there every few months, but generally leave them well alone

I just have a bit of a clear out with my little finger in the shower

maybe I’ve got really filthy ears and I don’t even know. I am quite deaf I think, but that’s more down to being old etc

I have absolutely disgusting waxy ears. Every time I take out my earbuds I hope nobody at work sees because they’re covered in grim brown treacly wax. Ugh

don’t do it at work then!

I meant headphone earbuds, not cotton buds. That would be grim

I have a real problem with obsessive behaviours like cleaning my ears. Do it every day and if I can’t do it for a few days on holiday etc I go a bit mad and paranoid and start sticking pen lids etc in there. (UP is right; Kirby grips are amazing for it. Glad I’m not the only one…)

This however is far better than it was a few years ago when I would do it 3 times a day, got cotton buds proper stuck in there twice and had to get them removed by a doctor, got infections all the time, etc. Managed to cut down but this is all part of a much larger pattern of obsessive damaging behaviours like skin picking etc.

as someone who has this constant sound going on in their ears all day every day, it’s not enjoyable for me.

When it follows a couple of weeks of deafness, pain and pressure, it’s a major relief.
