Baby Reindeer - Netflix

Feels like this deserves its own thread as its getting a lot of acclaim already.

Based on his 2019 stage show, tells the story of Richard Gadd’s real-life stalker and how it made him confront some previous trauma.

I saw the play and it completely shook me up at the time so very much looking forward to digging into this. Be careful with spoilers, OBVS.

Got two eps to go. Wish there were trigger warnings earlier on though because I might not have watched it. I know it’s signposted and there are warnings on the actual episode but I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I was invested by that point too. Not a massive criticism, and it’s all amazingly well realised and utterly gripping, I’m just not too sure I can go back to it (did try with the next ep).

It really does deserve the acclaim though.

Watched the first two

wow I’m impressed at how honest he’s been about being a fucking arsehole

Watched the first four episodes. Not what I was expecting. Incredibly dark. No idea where it will end up.

Thought his recording of his name and stupid dance after every crap joke was a good bit

Only done the first 2 episodes but absolutely love so far.

Got my mum staying as she’ll be looking after the house and cat while we’re away and I’ve just binged this over two afternoons. Have made the whole house very downbeat and quiet just as we’re packing to go on holidays, it’s deeply awkward.

Really fantastic, painful, absorbing show. So much tension, so much empathy. A bit I Might Destroy You, a bit Nanette, but also singular. Will stick with me for a long time.

Ray from The Office is in it

Episode 4, whilst staggeringly well done, is absolutely harrowing.

Finished this today. Incredibly grim but very well done. Utterly compelling. Actor who played Martha was fantastic.

Shit I was trying to think where I knew him from, of course he was.

Annoying thing about seeing The Office so much is I can’t ever not see them as that character. Even when Finchys in the Omen, bloody good excommunicated priest

Ended up watching it in one evening. I will be very surprised if there is better TV this year, just really well done.

They made a couple of changes from the stage show, namely The viral video didn’t happen in reality - though what did happen was arguably worse. He’d actually achieved some level of success at the time when he was going through these events and he was performing another show (Monkey See Monkey Do) which won a lot of plaudits - so while he was performing a show about sexual abuse he was also dealing with a stalker. Maybe they thought the chronology was a bit confusing but it’s a bit of a shame they didn’t represent that as to me it made the experience even more shocking. Episode 4 largely comes from Monkey See Monkey Do, which is why it feels like a stand alone episode.

It would have been so easy for Gadd to write himself as a blameless victim, but he makes such monumentally awful decisions. Equally, a lot of the stuff he tries to say to Martha comes from a place of empathy.

Also this piece is good

Saw the first two episodes last night. Can’t wait to finish work and watch the rest. It’s incredibly difficult and uncomfortable.

I heard that every showing of the play had to start with a warning to the audience that the stalker might be in the crowd? Sounds like it will have been properly intense - wish I’d have seen it now.

Yep and at the end he said a line like “I am very aware that there is a good chance she has heard about the play and may be here with us now” and everyone starting giving the people near them nervous side-eye.

This is properly excellent, still got two episodes left but was really not expecting it to take the turn it does.

I was wondering why he was quite weird and almost encouraging Martha throughout the first couple of episodes. The 4th and 5th episodes have been utterly compelling yet horrific to watch. When he ignores the phone call from his mum I was like :grimacing::grimacing::grimacing::grimacing:
