Yeah, as an album this one is a bit of a slog. Itās very downbeat. And, musically, itās about as minimal as he can get. Canāt fault the lyrics though of course!
Ah, this is really interesting. Iāve heard The Pogues version on Rum, Sodomy & The Lash too, but the parallels are much clearer when you hear The Dubliners doing it.
I thought I knew The Times They Are A Changing well, but Restless Farewell was the one song I didnāt remember when revisiting this week. I thought it had that āfeatured in a Boston policemanās wake movie sceneā vibe and now after reading your post, that makes perfect sense!
I actually heard Dylanās first (at least consciously) and didnāt know the Parting Glass connection for a long time so The Parting Glass always sounds like a weird cover to me and I have to remind myself itās the other way round.
Same with his non-album track Farewell from this period (as heard in Inside Llewyn Davis) which is basically a version of The Leaving of Liverpool, but I was a Dylan nerd long before I listened to much trad or Pogues
The genius of the man is you have a perfectly fine version of One Too Many Mornings of this record. And know I know, I keep harping on Hard Rain. But just listen to this version of, blows the studio version on this record to absolute smithereens.
I know itās a retread of āGirl From The North Countryā for a reason but that song is so much better.
āRestless Farewellā isnāt great either actually. A shame to end the album on that note after so many bangers. āOne Too Many Morningsā is a triumph.
