I really love this version of When The Ship Comes in from I’m Not There. Very pure and hopeful

Another 8.5 album for me the highs are high but there’s some filler here and some that quite don’t make the mark.

Beginning the think maybe I don’t like Bob Dylan as much as I thought I do

Disappointed for you ma man :sob::cry:

Yeah, as an album this one is a bit of a slog. It’s very downbeat. And, musically, it’s about as minimal as he can get. Can’t fault the lyrics though of course!

Ah, this is really interesting. I’ve heard The Pogues version on Rum, Sodomy & The Lash too, but the parallels are much clearer when you hear The Dubliners doing it.

I thought I knew The Times They Are A Changing well, but Restless Farewell was the one song I didn’t remember when revisiting this week. I thought it had that ā€œfeatured in a Boston policeman’s wake movie sceneā€ vibe and now after reading your post, that makes perfect sense!

I actually heard Dylan’s first (at least consciously) and didn’t know the Parting Glass connection for a long time so The Parting Glass always sounds like a weird cover to me and I have to remind myself it’s the other way round.

Same with his non-album track Farewell from this period (as heard in Inside Llewyn Davis) which is basically a version of The Leaving of Liverpool, but I was a Dylan nerd long before I listened to much trad or Pogues

Sad to see North Country Blues on zero votes, it’s brilliant

10/10. The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll radicalized me.

It’s very funny that John Lennon wore that hat for like 6 months because he was so in love with Dylan

Have to take it all back, what an incredible album. ā€˜Boots of Spanish Leather’ is the only dud on it, everything else is gold.

The genius of the man is you have a perfectly fine version of One Too Many Mornings of this record. And know I know, I keep harping on Hard Rain. But just listen to this version of, blows the studio version on this record to absolute smithereens.

I know it’s a retread of ā€˜Girl From The North Country’ for a reason but that song is so much better.

ā€˜Restless Farewell’ isn’t great either actually. A shame to end the album on that note after so many bangers. ā€˜One Too Many Mornings’ is a triumph.

Amazing how he can do the same song so differently so many years apart and they’re both fucking brilliant.

I’m liking all these alt versions and keen to dive into them. So keep them (and other outtake tracks) coming!
