Yeah I’m not saying that some of that isn’t a good thing (I still think people should be encouraged to see as much of the world as possible) but it doesn’t really go through my head alongside ‘christ I’d love to fuck off to Italy or Florida or wherever for a bit’.

I’m quite happy to say that car travel is bad too, I should look to restrict the time that I have electricity in my life as well, maybe if I spent more time in bed asleep then I’m consuming less stuff and also don’t need devices? We should all be encouraged to sleep more

I believe things like trying to avoid flying / driving on a personal level do make sense as the chart for an individual will look very different (a single long haul family holiday would totally skew it). And at that level it’s (imo) not entirely about stopping climate change but about not being someone who contributes to the problem. (I know it’s not quite that simple)

But if all the noise is about what we can do as individuals without addressing the system which encourages consumption and waste then we aren’t going to get far.

Some days I feel incredibly bleak about this because our entire way of life in this country is only possible within the current system by leeching on large parts of the rest of the world and whether or not we take a flight or two is meaningless and who would I be to tell someone else they can’t do something like that because it seems even the most ascetic person in the UK is still a huge part of the consumption problem compared to the rest of the world.

soz missed this thread yesterday, but I agree that failing to analyse your own attitude towards flying on a plane for a holiday regularly is a pretty Tory thing to (not) do.

I went to Italy this year, and Japan the year before, so I’m aware I’m a massive hypocrite, but yeah I don’t think I can justify flying on a plane in the next two years, at least.

guess what it’s a war right now and the rich have everything, all the money, the power, control of the media, post climate collapse bunkers, fascist footsoldiers, all that’s left is pride and dignity

Is quite far from Laelfy basically claiming, quite rightly, that people should be allowed to post about holidays or golf or whatever without being judged.
