Massively Tory aim you’re advocating there.

Ban this place, ban it to the ground.

I promised myself that I wouldn’t get involved in this thread, but rest assured, just as soon as my privately scheduled return flight from the annual Tyre Burning Championships lands, I shall be issuing my two pence.

People on twitter seem quite silly sometimes

I believe things like trying to avoid flying / driving on a personal level do make sense as the chart for an individual will look very different (a single long haul family holiday would totally skew it). And at that level it’s (imo) not entirely about stopping climate change but about not being someone who contributes to the problem. (I know it’s not quite that simple)

But if all the noise is about what we can do as individuals without addressing the system which encourages consumption and waste then we aren’t going to get far.

Some days I feel incredibly bleak about this because our entire way of life in this country is only possible within the current system by leeching on large parts of the rest of the world and whether or not we take a flight or two is meaningless and who would I be to tell someone else they can’t do something like that because it seems even the most ascetic person in the UK is still a huge part of the consumption problem compared to the rest of the world.

Saying that something is ‘surreal’ when you mean something minor was not quite what you expected.

Couple that up with “random” and you’ve got yourself a ban vote, my friend.

I think that about old people, do I get points?

soz missed this thread yesterday, but I agree that failing to analyse your own attitude towards flying on a plane for a holiday regularly is a pretty Tory thing to (not) do.

I went to Italy this year, and Japan the year before, so I’m aware I’m a massive hypocrite, but yeah I don’t think I can justify flying on a plane in the next two years, at least.

Yeah exactly, and part of accepting that is acknowledging our own privilege and being self-aware about it, which is part of what that Tory joke is!

Again, I don’t have a problem with either of those statements, and they’re not what you said.

What ideological extreme?

This is strawmanning

Maybe that’s the wrong choice of words but

guess what it’s a war right now and the rich have everything, all the money, the power, control of the media, post climate collapse bunkers, fascist footsoldiers, all that’s left is pride and dignity

Is quite far from Laelfy basically claiming, quite rightly, that people should be allowed to post about holidays or golf or whatever without being judged.

It is depressing. Addressing our personal consumption and carbon footprint is important, but can lead me to despair that no matter what I do it’s not going to be enough. Being aware of what you’re consuming is probably the most important step.

Also agree with your point that the current system is only possible by leeching on the rest of the world, getting them to make cheap stuff for us in a way that makes it easy to ignore the environmental cost of all the coal-fired power stations, lack of human rights and shit living standards in China.

I still think the long term solution has to be finding sustainable technology that can support relatively modern lifestyles for roughly the number of people currently on the Earth. I’d like to think that everyone could go back to pre-industrial revolution levels of consumption, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. So maybe better would be finding ways to support some degree of modern consumption in a sustainable way (renewable energy, recycling of the finite natural resources we have etc).

Reached its peak in South Africa imho, just cos the sign was better than half the ones you’d see at Arsenal games

Not sure if you’re joking or being thin-skinned or what, but (A) that’s not science, that’s an anecdote, and (B) there are a myriad of mental and physical health benefits to going out in the countryside.
