It is depressing. Addressing our personal consumption and carbon footprint is important, but can lead me to despair that no matter what I do it’s not going to be enough. Being aware of what you’re consuming is probably the most important step.
Also agree with your point that the current system is only possible by leeching on the rest of the world, getting them to make cheap stuff for us in a way that makes it easy to ignore the environmental cost of all the coal-fired power stations, lack of human rights and shit living standards in China.
I still think the long term solution has to be finding sustainable technology that can support relatively modern lifestyles for roughly the number of people currently on the Earth. I’d like to think that everyone could go back to pre-industrial revolution levels of consumption, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. So maybe better would be finding ways to support some degree of modern consumption in a sustainable way (renewable energy, recycling of the finite natural resources we have etc).
