I don’t mind this sort of interaction at all. It’s a bit easy to go “I will play NO part in this” and harrumph. It’s a bit like turning to your mate and saying “Why are you applauding? You know they’ll be back out to play their big hit…” - you can but why would you?

When I saw Les Savy Fav Tim made everyone get down on one knee so he could marry them. He then kissed all of the “brides”, which took a solid few minutes.

There’s a London based band called King Salami & the Cumberland Three who do this. (If anyone watched “UK’s Best Part Time Band” on television a couple of years ago, they came second - but had the last word at the end of the series.)

When they do it it’s in a song where ever instrument gets quieter and quieter and then BAM! they go back into the song and everyone jumps up again and has no choice but to dance rather than stand still. In that way it is effective.

Were any of you at this? Best audience participation ever

Was at the gig of 90s chart dance one hit wonder Paul Johnson and he kept telling people to Get Down

King Gizzard did this when I saw them recently, but I’d never heard of it or seen it before so it felt special and extremely fun. Also they went back into one of their monster riffs so a good time was had by all.

Yeah was gonna say they used to get everyone to lay on the floor during a nice loud bit

The Prodigy at Reading 08

GET DOWN MY READING PEOPLE

or something like that

Frank Turner. And, if you include sitting I suppose James

65daysofstatic did this at a small festival I went to a few years ago. They were great but the whole set was a bit awkward because you could tell a lot of the people at the front were just getting in early for whoever was on next (think it was Swim Deep? Didn’t stick around as they sounded dull) so I guess telling the crowd to crouch down and jump up for the drop was their way of energising everyone a bit.

I’m sure everyone would join you in your staged walk-out under these circumstances.

Was he always that creepy? I used to be quite a big fan (had the Fans Only DVD and everything) and I always thought he just came across as a bit awkward. Definitely felt a bit creepy when I saw them a couple of years ago. Maybe it’s an age thing, as checks wiki he’s 50 this year…

Dananananaykroyd did it when I saw them at Fibbers in York. I initially stayed stood up until realising, being a small quite enthusiastic crowd, I was the only one not doing it and got singled out by the band so sheepishly crouched. I should have just stayed stood up as a “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” but felt hugely self conscious!

Only ever experienced it once before, at King Gizzard in Camden 2016, didn’t know what the hell everyone was doing at first. It was a pretty amazing experience.

Janelle Monae did it when I saw her in Glasgow back in 2011, during a build up bit in Come Alive, was pretty amazing

I’ve only ever seen this at festival sets by terrible metalcore bands. Kids seem to love it, though.

I remember a band called ‘The FFers’ at Reading festival years ago had a several thousand strong crowd sit down backwards in protest because everyone was convinced it was a secret Foo Fighters set.

lol

They did it when I saw them at Glastonbury too. Must be something they save for festivals as I’ve never been to a “regular” 65dos gig where this happened…
