Their last album was well boring wasn’t it. Swear they’ve got a new one in the bag though, make or break time lads! They’re really fun live too.

I really like Reflektor! It’s their last album that I’d call dog shit, although the abba ripoff single has grown on me quite a bit.

I find it impressive with Arcade Fire that for a band with so many members, a decent length career to date and some weird changes in direction, they’ve had minimal lineup changes since Funeral. I think even the violinists who left still appear on a part time basis.

Seems strange that Green Day were the biggest band in the world with American Idiot. 6 albums since then!

I still struggle with the idea that anything Green Day exists post-Dookie.

Oh yeah! I remember green day!

Good example though - as you say American idiot was huge and while they’re obviously still a band with a large dedicated fanbase, it very much seems like the general audience they captured with that album was completely over it by the time it came to the follow up and everything after.

I think it’s often the case that punky or metal bands that do breach the mainstream will only ever grab people with that sound for one album. If you think of bands like Fall Out Boy/Paramore/Panic! At The Disco etc, they all went full on pop and are still big. Even someone like Linkin Park went down that way

Indeed. I’m pretty sure this isn’t the “bands people like that haven’t released a record for a while” thread. If I’m wrong, and it is, then Boards of Canada is the only correct response.

It was a slightly random observation, but I think losing key members can be the final nail for a band losing appeal e.g. Bloc Party. Staying together hopefully shows the band still have some faith in themselves.

What was the Vampire Weekend controversy? Missed that

they seem to have got most of the lineup changes out of their system between the debut EP and Funeral

i don’t really understand the whole thing where Sarah Neufield was a touring member/guest musician, then became a full time member, then went back to being a touring member/guest musician again - what’s the distinction if she’s still playing with them all the time anyway?

Oops, thought you were replying to a different comment earlier.

Maybe I’ve just not been following closely, but I’ve not really heard a fond word from anyone since they got massively praised around their debut. The name change thing seemed to get them panned from both sides of the debate.

Is this for Battles or Rick Boogs?

Rick would like to know.

second album was fairly big still, i think. third album was quite underwhelming and seemed to be quickly forgotten

Yeah second album was really good, third album sounded like they’d totally run out of ideas. Saw them live supporting it though and they were really bloody good live. Think the next Preoccupations album will be another make or break thing. If it’s a disappointment then they’ve clearly had their day but I wouldn’t discount them writing another stonker.

Seemed like they had a pretty good amount of attention for awhile and then no one ever talked about them again.
