Bands like your first girlfriend

Bands that gave you so much joy, are genuinely happy they are doing well but you just have no feelings for them anymore ( albeit you do have a peek how their doing every now and then)

interpol
elbow
the national
drive by truckers
belle and sebastian

Loving the gendered nature of this post. Really necessary.

I think it really works, if you use partner rather than girlfriend.

this thread smells of piss

It isn’t just that it’s phrased badly but it is gendered. It isn’t applicable to women who date men, men who date men, non-binary people etc.

Also I think there’s already a thread like this called ‘bands you used to like and went off’ or something. It’s not about embarrassing or belittling someone is it, it’s about flagging up a bizarre and potentially divisive/offensive thing that has happened.

(And it’s just a bit weird, full stop.)

Been a general weird slide back in time on here recently imo too.

Maybe im too far down the rabbit hole but I assumed this kind of reaction was the intention. The montreal screwjob, grassy knoll, steel beams.

Belle and Sebastian can’t melt steel Beams (or even something with a really low melting point like chocolate)

Shit thread (with more replies than most of mine get already)

We know nothing about the OP so maybe worth considering that they’re a decent person who made a poorly worded thread rather than treating them like a wierd creep.

Phrasing aside, it’s just another bands you no longer care about/lost interest in thread.
Basically another thread about The National.

But part of the poor wording makes them sound a bit creepy, there’s nothing wrong with pointing that out?

apart from they have only posted one other thread which is clearly a spammy thread for a band they are in.

How does it make them sound creepy? They aren’t asking for anybody to send photos of their exes or even talk about them, just using the concept of the “first girlfriend” to illicit a chat about bands that people have moved on from liking. The premise of the thread is talking about music.

It’s great that DiS rejects gendered language and heteronormative assumptions, truly. I’m all in. But I also think the correct response to this is not “ew, creepy, shit thread” when actually we could just provide constructive feedback to the OP and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Generally the tone of the thread made me feel uncomfortable.

I mean sure, it’s possible that you’re right that a member of an early 00s indie band joined under a psudonym in 2023 to revive the band on community.drownedinsound.com, despite the band not having released anything on Spotify since 2005. Certainly can’t rule it out.

Reading that post of mine back, in the context of this thread it might come across as being very shitty and snarky, sorry. I did intend it a bit more lightearted than it might seem in text only format.

Obviously shouldn’t be gendered and its right to point that out but other than that I don’t think it’s a ‘creepy’ premise? Not sure about piling in too hard on new users and scaring people off immediately.
