Bands that took their whole sound from one song

Probably done this thread before (surely?) but couldn’t find it.

‘Ripped off’ a bit harsh maybe. Not even really a criticism as I like both of these bands, but can’t not hear it.

Titus Andronicus:

Fuck Buttons:

(And loads of post rock. Still find it mad it came out in 1975)

With a bit of this

I’d never thought of that Eno/Fuck Buttons one. I think their noise inclinations kept me from considering what might have inspired the rest, but it’s a fair shout

Love this, feel it happens quite often:

LCD Soundsystem

(Specifically this version)

Ultimate Painting

Pottery

I remember someone saying that Muse essentially built a whole career around that one guitar solo in Paranoid Android. Dunno how apt that is now though

Similarly, I read somewhere that “Sway” by the Rolling Stones launched Aerosmith’s entire career, although I haven’t heard enough Aerosmith to confirm this…

Here’s Soft cell/ pet shop boys/ Erasure in 1979

LCD Soundsystem drew very obviously from their influences, didn’t they

they stole from more than just that tune tho, no?

like Berlin Bowie, all sorts of disco stuff, ESG (who I guess were very post-Talking Heads already)

I see this as the template for Belle and Sebastian.

side-note: I feel so silly for never having listened to that compilation before

rhythm section sounds immaculate (which is the main LCD influence, innit, that crisp + tight drums/bass)

That is, um, quite blatant.
