After the primal scream news about how badly they treated Martin Duffy ( Statement from his son below) any other examples of bands acting badly with members?
I’m pretty sure Bill Wyman (also not the greatest guy etc.) claimed that Mick and Keef effectively took writing credits off him for classic Stones tracks and that was one of the reasons he left the band.
Absolutely fuck Bobby. What an absolute ballbag. Thought he’d be better than that but as pointed out he clearly spouts his socialism just for image. Very disappointing.
Hard to know the full details but Sergio leaving Deftones looked sour af. Cowrote songs and was a member for over a decade but was on some kind of temp contract the whole time
When he knew he was dying, Bob Marley arranged for the members of the Wailers to get co-writing credits on his songs, thinking that this way he would be able to leave them a continual source of money after he was gone. Was obviously contested by Island Records and Marley’s estate and band members ended up with nothing. Island and the estate sold off a large proportion of Marley’s catalogue recently for $80 million. Band members obviously didn’t see a penny of this either.
Bob Marley also put a guy called Vincent Ford as a co writer on a number of his most famous songs, including No Woman No Cry. Vincent Ford wasn’t a band member, but he did run a charitable soup kitchen in Trenchtown. Thankfully the Marley estate weren’t able to dispute this bit, and the soup kitchen still runs today and still gets the royalty payments (even after Ford had passed). Bob Marley was a very good dude
Don’t think the two are absolutely exclusive tbh, you can still wear nice clothes and do fashion stuff while being a decent person and politically sound. More that he (and Innes) absolutely shafted his band mate of 30+ years when he clearly needed help is the issue for me
I’m sure there’s a quote from Bowie saying he covered Iggy Pop because he thought Iggy really needed the money. (Maybe I’m misremembering though.)
You’re probably right. Always struck me as a bit of a poser (and I fucking love at least three of their records), so probably some confirmation bias affecting my thinking there.
Think Pink Floyd did something similar for Barrett, covering one of his tracks on a big live release so that he would get some income and making sure the re-releases of Piper at the Gates and the early singles were always done fairly.
Been on the fence about this since reading Nick Kent’s Apathy For The Devil. Now, Kent’s not the most reliable narrator but the story of Marley being a homophobic prick to Kent in a mens room has stayed with me.
Not a band member but think it’s a shame how Mal Evans ended up having a violent death in poverty despite working so closely with the Beatles for so long
He gave a lot to charity and supported his friends, but was a massive adulterer and apparently a homophobe. His overall net benefit was probably good, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t also do bad things.
Yeah - I mean he wasn’t a saint or anything, but did absolutely masses for his community (both finacially and otherwise) and was totally egalitarian with his bandmates despite his massive success - pretty much the polar opposite of most 70s rock stars. Was also renowned for his treatment of staff at venues, restaurants etc.
@Al_Rec Haven’t read the Nick Kent account of him, but his general reputation was that he was extremely easy going, but also could be violent if provoked. Not suggesting Kent’s account is wrong or anything - I haven’t even read it - but was there anything that kicked it off, or was it just a straightforward homophobic attack?
