Pretty sure that’s Pusha T
There used to be a pretty amazing version of Dark Stars in the Dazzling Sky on YouTube but it’s probably been taken down…
I remember being really blown away by the Dead Science supporting Casiotone at the Bristol Cube in about 2005 - really charismatic, really tight.
But on record they were NOT my bag.
This is pretty much all jazz for me. Live, love it. On record, you’re ok mates, not for me.
Bo Ningen again
Also, been to see Orbital twice in the past 2 years doing the Green and Brown albums. Not that I don’t like those albums, it’s just that hearing what are massively updated versions (mainly due to technical improvements) live sound so much better.
Same with me, really enjoyed a few live shows, never once even tried an album.
Came to post this!
quite a lot of hardcore bands tbh
Distinctly remember seeing a Silver Mt Zion at the Brudenell just before Horses in the Sky came out, and thought it was absolutely incredible. Went and mail-ordered their album (as was the style at the time) and although the packaging was great, and it was a real rush to get something from Constellation in the post, the album was proper flat and I never went back to it, or them really.
Strongly recommend 13 Blues for 13 Moons if you do feel like giving them another go
I don’t know all their stuff but He Has Left Us Alone is such a gorgeous album
Yeah I have a soft spot for that one too, but very different to 13 Blues, which is quite heavy in places
I mainly know the first and last albums and need to do more listening to the ones in between
Another one for The Flaming Lips. I do like The Soft Bulletin, but never listen to it. Their appearance at T in the Park when they replaced The White Stripes was phenomenal, though. Started with Seven Nation Army barked through a megaphone despite not knowing the lyrics. Also included an extended version of Thank You Jack White For The Fiber-Optic Jesus That You Gave Me elaborating on the “true story” between each verse.
Maybe Sparks too? They appeared mid-afternoon during a torrential downpour at Skye Music Festival and properly woke me up after a crap night’s sleep. I find a full album a bit too much, though.
But unorthodox to jump in with the coding track, but BlindBlindBlind is quite an invigorating 13-odd mins
From the heart of town by gallon drunk is a bit of a lost classic imo. Some other decent ones but none as consistent as that one.
For me, prob the hives. Albums are patchy at best but live they’re fantastic and they’ve got enough across their career for a fantastic set
Don’t agree with it being flat but it was loads better live. Think they had bits in the live versions that didn’t make it onto the album too
Everything Everything.
I find his voice grates a bit after I listen to them for a while on record but I’ve not seen any band more than them and have a great time every time I see them.
first answer I thought of was Body Hound, instrumental metal played with impeccable chops, really fun and silly but ferocious and with so much groove (obviously lads who grew up on nu-metal and Rage Against The Machine and etc.)
I would even go as far as saying that no one could ever capture their live thing on record.
saw them at Boomtown 2017, then again at Brixton Academy in 2018. wonderful fun but agreed - no need to listen to them at all
just in case anyone wants some incredibly summery pop @Yesiamaduck posted this at some point and fuck me it’s good
Saw Darkstar at Field Day years ago. Their sound was a wild mix of synth and random noise. Me and my pal were transfixed. Highlight of the festival.
Mooching around town the next day waiting for the train home I bought their album. Got home and it was just a bunch of dreary “songs.”
Couple of weeks later I read an interview where they were talking about what a bad time they had at Field Day. All their gear was shorting out and feedbacking and they could barely get through a song without something else going wrong. Worst gig they’d ever played apparently…
