Their worst stuff I can laugh at (thank you for introducing me to that song about breaking into the mall) but to me that one’s always felt lazy and plodding in a completely humorless way. It feel almost like it was written by a focus group.

All of them

Yes, I know, it’s now (legitimately) fashionable to criticise them, but in my late teens, when their early eps and debut came out, I thought they were very good. Their debut is a very, very good album. Subsequently, however, they embraced generic, stadium filler rock/ballads and the rest is history.

What does “become an arrogant meme” mean? I’ve seen FJM derided as a meme a few times now, but never really understood it.

To be honest, I’m not really sure what memes are beyond pictures with pithy captions on - though I’m aware they’ve taken on some kind of broader cultural significance.

Wouldn’t say hate exactly but seeing nowadays Belle and Sebastian at Primavera was an incredibly depressing experience.

Sorry, was a bit drunk when I wrote that - I just mean that the character of FJM has become so overbearing and it is not something I enjoy. I think the meme thing is just because a lot of the attention he seems to get is based on quippy/snarky things he says being shared on the internet (although that has maybe died down a bit now).

He’s obviously talented and a good performer, but for me the character is detrimental to the music.

That’s a little unfair. Enter Shikari have always been, if nothing else, consistently shit from day one.

When I hear a new B&S song I imagine I’m hearing what their detractors have always heard: aloof, arch, twee nonsense. They’re a little like the magnetic fields for me in that respect - another band that I used to love, turning out tunes bereft of any kind of sincerity whatsoever.
