my number one recommendation is that you support the Charlotte Hornets.
they are a super-fun up-and-coming young team with no history but that which they look to make going forwards, with last year’s Rookie of the Year - LaMelo Ball - at the core.
sooo many of the best plays of last season were Hornets ones
you’ll also notice that their main commentator is an absolute joy, and that their uniforms are gorgeous.
honestly don’t think there’s another team as fun as them* to start supporting.

Hornets are almost like bees, and we all like bees
Think it’s worth doing what @acorn did and picking a city and then the teams there (eg the football team Falcons and the basketball team Hawks from Atlanta).
Other than Atlanta though I think the only other reasonable east coast city you could consider is Detroit. Their football team is awful but their basketball team has some moments and has an interesting history.
obvs Detroit are intriguing in terms of history and where they stand to go with their rebuild (and we all know about the city itself)
