In an ideal world, it wouldn’t be important. Unfortunately we live in a world where the government would love to get rid of the BBC, so the BBC feels the need to chase clicks to show it has an audience so it can justify the licence fee and its very existence. Again, I’m not defending the BBC’s approach, I think it’s terrible, it’s not what a public service broadcaster should be doing, but I can see why it is happening in the current context.

reckon the government must secretly love the bbc nowadays though

the tories are incapable of loving the bbc

they will continue to squeeze it until it dies

reckon they still give out that impression, but they must know how much it has enabled them, BBC is straight up on their side

Entertainment, satire and comedy etc will all suffer.
BBC will always prioritise the news.
BBC news is The Mouth of Sauron for the Tories. And the public fund it.

Win win for them.

Oh GREAT, I see Corbyn’s Momentum trolls have decided to engage in another pile-on once again against a well-respected excellent journalist just because she isn’t calling for a gallows to be erected outside Downing Street! #FBPE

terrible journalist

Absolutely fuck this

Presumably this doubles as a way for Helen Lewis to say that being eg. a terf, is good without having to talk about it.

She’s just asking questions (about whether some people should exist), man.

almost convinced myself bbc news had been doing a good job lately- for the change in covid policy and the cummings thing as well, saw them interview three members of the public consecutively who were critical of govt, with nobody in favour. showed even kuenssberg effectively saying cummings was staying because of his expediency to Johnson.

BUT in both of those situations, bbc opened with Johnson suited, talking from a lectern and that might be the nothing to see here takeaway for anyone apathetic or subservient.

not sure they’d allow a labour leader that appearance of control.

cw: reporting of sexual violence and death, with headline formatting compared

Uh-huh.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-52783625

Victim is a teenage girl, so that gets the primary mention (along with the fact that they were in the woods, to fuel a ‘debate’ about whether they ought to have been there in the first place?). Perpetrator is given a secondary mention, with ‘cyclist’ being the key feature of identification.

Compare with…

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-52788566

Perpetrator gets the primary mention this time. Coincidence that they’re a teenager (an 18 year old woman, no less)? Doesn’t mention the mode of transport of the perpetrator, whereas that the victim, given the secondary mention, and identified by their mode of transport, was “struck” (by a car? presumably, but that’s not made clear).

There’s an inconsistency in those headlines, right?

The primary aim seems to be identifying minority characteristics, and pointing fingers, even victim blame, rather than employ any kind of consistency or standard to the reporting.

Would be so easy to re-write the headlines in a more responsible manner, rather than resort to this sort of thing.

And I get that that certain mentions in the first example may help with investigations, whereas in the latter example someone has already been charged, but still…

all is forgiven, yesterday’s coverage. after cummings conference the next 5 opinions they went to were pro cummings tories- 3 tweets from tory mps then 2 pro cummings former spads

:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Anything to make sure Boris has whatever “he so deserves”.

This is so fucking pathetic. The number of outrageous things the BBC does for the benefit of the government and there’s zero accountability for any of them, then they go and fess up to this complete nonsense (or reprimand their staff for politely pointing out when Trump is being racist).
