Not been as engaged as I should be here but that’s probably because it’s end of year and I’m listenin’ and ratin’ albums, adding even more stuff to my queue, and trying to get to some of it.
Check Your Head is an incredible record. I remember everyone being so obsessed with it in 92-94, with good reason. Again it leveled the playing field and spoke to kids in different circles, perhaps even more than Licensed to Ill given the mixture of styles here.
Tough picking 3 top songs here, think “Jimmy James” and “So What’cha Want” are the obvious votes but I had a handful of other tracks rated 9/10. Also don’t think the album dips at all in the second half…“The Maestro” and “Live at P.J.'s” are a couple of other favorites on that side, surrounded by 8/10 tracks. When an album’s low points are tracks like “Linger Fickin’ Good” and “Namasté” (personal opinion of course, still high 7/10), well that’s just really nice. Really love the vibe and the samples, just everything about it. It’s positive but also aggressive at times to balance everything out.
I ride on the bus into the city every day, I sit on my seat and I dream myself away.
Strong 9/10
