Could be ammo. That second explosion is just staggering and surely a fireworks factory wouldn’t have that scale of explosives sitting around

I’m not sure. Given other, similar incidents (eg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enschede_fireworks_disaster), it doesn’t strike me as beyond the bounds of possibility.

No need to apologise. Will have to see what happens and hopefully if there was a fire or something they were able to get people clear

The full video of the explosion looks like an atomic bomb going off. Hard to see there not be a huge amount of fatalities.

I said ‘could be’

Could also be near something like a grain silo, which are notoriously volatile.

I have never seen anything like that. So shocking.

I thought the second one might be a gas tower or something (the big white building) which may have been ignited by the first fire/explosion (the possible fireworks factory)? Whatever it is, it’s something that’s ignited suddenly and completely.

I meant the storage of fireworks.

Footage inside newspaper building aftermath

That building is 400 metres from where it happened apparently. Insane.

hoping they’re all safe leafy.

There was one in Tainjin a few years ago that looked similar (but bigger). Almost doesn’t look real.

As an aside, will be interesting to see this week whether or not Hezbollah will be implicated in the killing of Rafik Hariri. Remember that. Utter madness.

I just think it’s deeply weird to be trying to link it to that at this stage.

Thanks - I checked with my dad and they live in a coastal town a little outside the city so should be fine, sounds like it’s mostly the port area that was mainly affected

I don’t know why on earth they are. I know the beeb aren’t great but it’s a pretty odd thing to jump on even by their standards.

Jesus :frowning: Reminiscent of the Halifax Explosion.

I’ve have also seen a few ‘international studies’ or ‘middle east analyst’ types on twitter trying to drag it onto the table when there’s scant details around.

I know most of them are at best hawkish cranks (and at worst, spooks), but you’d hope that the BBC wouldn’t indulge it.
