Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper. Yes, i know itā€™s a cover and yes i know a lot of people whose opinions i otherwise respect love it for various reasons but fuck me that is the absolute worst song. The combination of that fucking vocal style with those repellant words. Iā€™m not capable of repositioning them as some kind of arch feminist commentary, i just hate them.

I donā€™t hate many things, but my god do I HATE Birdhouse in Your Soul. Itā€™s so close to a bunch of stuff I really like (Eels, Barenaked Ladies) but itā€™s so, so terrible. Goes in the box with another song I detest, which is the Mmm Mmm Song or whatever the hell itā€™s called by Crash Test Dummies. Just no. No, no, no.

Growing up in a Town where an 80s club was one of the only options for a late night out means I canā€™t stand a lot of the 80s classics. I Wanna Dance With Somebody is probably the main one, thereā€™d be loads of others.

Fucking hate The Beautiful South too, but this thread is for ā€œbeloved songsā€ and I refuse to believe they have any.

On the other hand, Iā€™m a huge fan of Pink Floyd but detest this song. Itā€™s too preachy and simple. None of the space and beauty of Floyd at their best. I hate when they became a vehicle for Roger Waters just to vent his anger towards society.

I think shorn of context as a single this is maybe fair, but within the album I think it says a lot about the horrors of public school education for kids who simply werenā€™t made to be Tory confirmist drones.
