Truly extraordinary that 11 of the top 15 on the composite AOTY list are by female artists (you could say 11.5 if you include Low). It’s been a development over the last few years but that’s an amazing figure. By comparison the equivalent list from ten years ago (on acclaimedmusic.net) has two female artists and another two female fronted bands in the top 30.

Can’t believe they still drag this list out for so long.

Simply don’t get the love for A Poem Unlimited at all. Compared to Half Free it’s such a let down. The live band sound route that Megan is heading down is so jarring and incongruous in the context of her career hitherto. But even if it wasn’t, the songs just aren’t there barring the odd track. For me the biggest disappointment of the year.

forgot to vote this year, but then again I don’t really read p4k anymore so

I pretty much just vote as a courtesy to let them know the “Best Live Act - The Smashing Pumpkins” guy isn’t trapped under a pile of something.

I really must be missing something with the Mitski record.

If you think the songs are just worse then fair enough, but I don’t get the whole live band issue.

Artists change up their sound all the time, I don’t see why her songwriting being “different” to how it was before suddenly becomes “jarring”. Surely the album stands or falls in its own, why does it have to be considered in the context of what came before.

I’m just an old stick in the mud. When I got into her music 10+ years ago she was a straight up, hard-core noise artist, and, although she’s been slowly evolving her sound since U.S. Girls on KRAAK, this is a complete 360 degree turn, which I just don’t like. Maybe if the songs were better I’d feel different but I don’t think so.

Greta Van Fleet at #12. Good work lads

This is the first album of hers I’ve listened to so I’m definitely not coming at it with your levels of knowledge. I can see how that much of a change would be tricky to handle tbf

Have you heard Half Free?

For me that’s her high water mark. It still has that experimental element to her music but it was her first truly accessible work. One of the albums of the decade, imho.

Nope, I’ll give it a go!

Right, fine. Guess I have to give this bloody Mitski album another go, then.

I’ve been giving it a proper listen and am starting to appreciate it more. I still don’t think it’s the record of the year but it has four or five really good songs and overall is a wide ranging and interesting record. My problem with it is that it seems a little ‘slight’ - it’s really short (half an hour) which is not necessarily a bad thing in itself, but as it squeezes in 14 songs a fair few of them seem a little under-developed to me. If your attention wanders for a minute or so you find three songs have passed without impinging much on your attention. I think as I listen to it more more of the songs will stick a bit more though.

It’s not my album of the year but it’s my grower of the year for sure. Went from indifferent to loving it over about five or six spins.
