I’m sure we’ll get those who saw Nirvana, Bowie or The Carpenters out of the way early doors, but which band do you think you saw before anyone else here?
Let’s try to keep to keep things obvious by starting your post with the band name, followed by the date that you saw the band. From there, please regale us with your tales of these early gigs.
This is not a ranking event, so I’m afraid no points will be awarded, but if your tales conjure the event well enough, you might pocket a pretty pot of precious likes.
Prob some earlier claims for this band but this was my second ever gig as a school kid and not entirely sure how I managed to get in(first was sultans of ping fc)
am willing to bet I am the first (maybe only) to see Ed Sheeran as I saw him as an unsigned act at In The City in the 00s. but he isn’t very good is he.
I think the times Maybeshewill and Everything Everything (and their former guise ‘Noon’) supported my band were their first or second shows in both cases. Circa 2006 and 2007 respectively.
I saw The Strokes supporing …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead at Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms in early 2001. This was a rescheduled show because for some reason Trail of Dead couldn’t tour the UK in October 2000. I can’t remember why .There might be some New Yoikers lurking here who saw them in the states, but this was the first UK Strokes show.
Bizarrely, I didn’t think that Trail of Dead would do a tour so I had tickets to the NME gig at the Astoria in 2001 where both The Strokes and Trail of Dead played. With… I think, Clinic and Peaches? So I saw both Trail of Dead and The Strokes twice in the same week.
2001 Trail of Dead blew the Strokes off the stage on both occasions.
that was Trail of Dead, Clinic, The Faint, and British Sea Power opened. The TOD show was filmed for the video for Another Morning Stoner (I was at this one too).
According to their website it was the 06/12 I’ve always thought it was a week later but there you go. Anyway the bass amp blew up so it all sounded really weird. They had A Certain Romance didn’t finish with it and I don’t think it had the intro (I might conflating 2 memories with that bit)
Don’t think I have any others really once you say that one everything else is small from my teenage years, saw Wu Lyf a few times at An Outlet and the gig at St Peter’s. Courteeners used to do live sets all round Manchester and the towns so saw them a fair bit until their 1st single just by dint of them doing Thursday nights at The Castle back home. Saw a fair bit of early MONEY.
Trying to think of bands I saw pre 1st album release/1st album tour and most went absolutely nowhere.
I think that was 2002. I was really into the first Faint album and was dead excited to see them and then theyt didn’t play Agenda Suicide. That might have been the Clinic year
