not necessarily comeback albums, but bands you lost interest in then got a pleasant surprise when they dropped something new and it clicked all over again
DCFC - Asphalt Meadows is one for me
a band I loved all the way through to Codes & Keys, then got very little from their next two albums, assumed they’d fade into indie legacy act status. Instead AM was great! Has a couple of properly top level Death Cab songs (I Don’t Know, Foxglove), whole thing sounds good, and they just seem more engaged and lively again
made it extra irking to miss them playing it due to Ben’s sickness but ah well
The Strokes – The New Abnormal
Embryonic by the Flaming Lips.
At War With The Mystics was crap but then they totally surprised me with a seventy minute album of psych rock jams. A shame they couldn’t keep it up after The Terror and lapsed back into saccharine whimsy.

Orbital - Wonky

Was a bit disappointed by how Orbital petered out towards the end. Their live shows remained great, but The Altogether followed by The Blue Album saw them end phase one of their career with their two weakest albums. Them reuniting was exciting enough, but to then accompany it with an album full of bangers was beyond my expectations. Very fun album ![]()
I don’t consider it a classic or anything, but No Geography was far more fun than I’d expected from the Chemical Brothers nine albums in.
as someone who was never much of a fan, I really enjoyed that. Then I think For That Beautiful Feeling was even better, they’re on a good run now
The White Album gets most of the plaudits but Everything Will Be Alright In The End is when Weezer showed they still had plenty left in the tank. It’s almost White’s equal imo.
I haven’t heard them (this thread has reminded me to do so) but a friend reckons the last few Suede albums are really good. I’m a massive fan of Dog Man Star, though I don’t think the new ones are a return to that sound. I guess I should find out.
While there are songs I like on all the intervening records I think last year’s Yo La Tengo album was probably the first one I really liked all the way through since I’m Not Afraid of You.
Generally though I think once a band has put out a record I don’t like they’re pretty much dead to me, which feels harsh but there’s just so much music isn’t there.
not even Fade??
I like Ohm and Before We Run but can’t remember anything else about that album.
remember to listen to it again then ![]()
That new Jack White album.
Primal Scream very briefly got me back on board with ‘More Light’, but then quickly kicked me off again after that.
I’d read that they went back to all their old gear and had fun making stuff that way instead of being on computers all the time, which is why it sounds a lot more loose (and way more fun lol)
Manic Street Preachers - Journal for Plague Lovers. Might be their best album.
Chemical Brothers - Further
Ruminations. Technically a solo record not Bright Eyes but it saved his career imho.
Death Cab have done this to me twice, first with Narrow Stairs after the absolute squib of Plans, and then again with Asphalt Meadows.
