Best small music venues in Scotland?

Going on a bit of a tour north of the border soon and would like to try a few smaller gigs. Any recommendations? Smaller the better, but places with character and a bit of atmosphere and that, or church gigs, or the odd place off the beaten track as they say in the trade.

Shoot…

King Tut’s in Glasgow
Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh

The acoustics in there are sublime

Hug and Pint is good for a scrappy gig that feels like they’re playing in your bedroom

Banshee Labyrinth in Edinburgh can be fun

Summerhall in Edinburgh is a great venue. It has its own microbrewery and gallery space on site too.

Liquid Room is my fav for the actual sound of gigs, proper sound system unlike some of the PA for hires you get at smaller clubs

Usually crappy covers bands and has been 00 indie favs playing there but still - when you get a good band in there oooh it rocks

Also the main gig space is The Dissection Room - which must be just about the best named stage in the land

I saw Fuck Buttons there.

Only been once and loved it, but doesn’t seem to be much there that catches my eye lately

Though Youth Lagoon are playing there in about a month

Absolutely not this.

Its not small by any means but if someone decent is playing Barrowlands then absolutely go because it is a magical and historically rich place that always sounds amazing, best venue in the country for my money other than maybe Brudenell.

Otherwise, Nice N Sleazy for small venue, though it doesn’t do as many gigs anymore it also shares a rich history

Especially if there’s something on in the room upstairs! I saw Stars of the Lid in there. Lovely space with great sound.

even if you don’t like it as a venue there’s absolutely no denying its history and significance.

Thats almost what makes it more annoying though, its got a reputation based on Oasis being signed there and they REALLY WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT IT but the sound is shit and the people who run it are notorious arseholes in my experience

aye but oasis aside so many amazing bands have played there over the years
