Find it very, very weird how adverts can enter the cultural zeitgeist more significantly than genuine artworks.
Remember when David Cameron did that “calm down, dear” line from the Michael Winner commercial?

Favourite facts about that advert:

  • GIL! SCOTT! HERON! does the “You Know When You’ve Been Tangoed” voiceover at the end.
  • The orange man now runs Geeves brewery: http://www.geevesbrewery.co.uk/

Is that Russell Tovey as the kid in there?

F, R, I, E, N, D, S, do you really need them? Yes.

They have a decent panel show here in Australia called Gruen that is basically taking the piss out of advertising and talking about the techniques they use.

At the end of the episode they play some kind of classic ad and recently they played this one as an example of how fucking weird the British view of Australians is

TBH “I can see the pub from here!” is still a line that gets use every now and again.

It’s not actually that great but I remember the concept blew my 8 year old mind when I first saw it

(and obviously it was rarely played on account of being so long.)
