1 Record’s just a perfect album isn’t it, 13 is one of the best songs of all time, El Goodo not far behind. I don’t listen to too much of the later stuff but this alone is such a stone cold classic.
+1 for nabbing Mike Mills for the tribute also.
Aw man, the other albums are both incredible in their own ways.

Funnily enough I was just pondering the lack of a Big Star thread yesterday. I’m currently reading this*:

*Just taking a little break from reading it, as I’ve reached the recording of Third - and as I’m currently a bit ill, it might be a bit too much right now.

Love the first 2 records but the atmosphere of some of the stuff on third is like nothing else - Nighttime and holocaust are particularly stunning.
Chris Bell’s I am the cosmos record deserves a special mention here too. Equally as devastating as third.
I saw Jody’s Third tribute show in Sydney about 11 or so years ago - there was an all-star cast including Mike Mills, Cat Power, Edwyn Collins and others. Great stuff.

I love big star, blue moon in particular is a really special song to me. Also their band name is a perfect band name imo, couldn’t name a better one

He didn’t produce the best Tim demos but I’m glad they were all so close.
Thirteen just the best, it’s the cliche answer but it’s just a perfect song. My first girlfriend put it on a mix CD for me when we started dating…and if ever a song was made to be put on a mix CD for someone you fancy as a teenager it’s this song.

3rd is one of my favourite albums apart from Jesus Christ which I HATE with a passion.
I’m glad Jon Auer (Posies) is still involved, after the Ken Stringfellow allegations. And his replacement by Norman Blake is potentially an upgrade.
Big Star were such an enormous influence on so many great American and British (Scottish) bands.
I got into Big Star because of Teenage Fanclub’s Bandwagonesque and used to play the # 1 Record/Radio City CD a lot when I was working behind the bar in the local pub in 1992. That and Changesbowie. The locals didn’t seem to mind but then they had 5 nights out of 7 on their usual diet of hair metal and classic rock.
Absolutely love the melodies and harmonies of those first two albums. O My Soul, You Get What You Deserve, September Gurls, The Ballad of El Goodo, Thirteen, When My Baby’s Beside Me and Watch the Sunrise are wonderful songs.
It took me a bit longer to get into 3rd and Chris Bell’s I Am the Cosmos - both through This Mortal Coil.
