They’re not pleasant is the thing, almost every one of the performances on record or live is pretty tortured.
There weren’t any bands in 2006 with as much lyrical potency or interesting ideas as Big Thief are putting out rn, at least within this subgenre
Mitski comes close but not really a band as such I guess, although she plays with one

Saw them in Stiff Kitten once. Were very good.
