The colour of that sky is incredible

It was absolutely perfect weather, and the buzzard was flying super-low over the house. I lightened the shadows so you could see more detail on the underside of the wings but very little processing beyond that - the sky really was that intensely blue.

Massive pigeon sat on the tree across the way whilst it was blowing a hoolie was pretty funny

Found where the goldfinches like to hang out in the park.

Been finding it really mindful wandering around looking for birds etc. to take photos of. Listening out and looking for things instead of being lost in my thoughts and not paying attention to my surroundings.

Heard a bird noise I didn’t recognise so looked out of the window and saw a bird I’ve never seen before! It was larger than all of the others I’ve seen, brownish but with a bright red crest. It flew away before I could grab my phone to take a photo. There was a flash of yellow or green as he flew away.

It might have been a European green woodpecker! Is that likely? It looked like this:

The only time I’ve seen one of these, it was after hearing an unusual bird call, so it sounds plausible to me. It sounds distinctive and vaguely laugh-like. Maybe find a recording of its call and see if it was what you heard?

Yeah it’s a very distinctive and very audible call.

Yes! This was the noise! Great idea, thank you. I wasn’t sure if the call I heard was the same bird or unrelated.

When I first moved to this area I kept thinking I was hearing and seeing an implausibly large number of green woodpeckers. Turns out there are ring-necked parakeets near me, which are also green and have a similar-sounding call.

They’re another one where you hear them before you see them. I think the first time I saw them I heard a racket and thought the cat must be having a disagreement with some birds in the garden. Went out for a look and the culprits were flying around way above the house, not in the garden at all. They were so loud I thought they were just outside.

Over the last month I’m averaging a Bald Eagle sighting once a week. It must be the weather!

Not sure whereabouts you are, but I fondly remember a hotel room near Fredonia in NY, looking out onto lake Erie. 8 bald eagles on the pier, amazing sight. First ever bald Eagle sighting.

I told the people at SUNY Fredonia (who I was visiting) about it, and a chap pointed me in the direction of a Snowy owl in a park nearby. Saw that too, first and only Snowy Owl!

Eight! that’s amazing. I am based in the middle of Ohio and the photo was taken at Alum Creek State Park.

Top 3 Bald Eagle sightings.

The first time. I was driving down a highway and crossing an overpass when an Eagle flew across my path, maybe a metre above the car.

It was the first run myself and Mrs PeB had undertaken on our local trail after moving to our house. We turned a corner and a massive bird swooped down above our heads, again really close! Turns out we were right next to where a pair of eagles have nested for many a year. You can watch the nest from the trail.

Last summer. Kayaking down a river and an eagle flew over us twice. Awesome!

Tried a binocular shot, but it’s not the best

I was in the Catskills October before last. Stopped by a lake and saw a Bald Eagle, a Great Blue Heron and a Belted Kingfisher in the space of 5 minutes. First time I’d done any birding in America. Was a good start.
