they never died out, but both bears and wolves have made a big comeback in Spain over the past 20 years, and haven’t really had a negative impact on farming. also see huge wild boars and hawks etc like weekly when I’m in the country, which is pretty cool.

Not at all, I just have a slightly nerdy level of interest in animals/nature and like the idea of rewilding and stuff. I think we should reintroduce wolves eventually but in the meantime the recent-ish reintroduction of beavers is pretty cool. And escaped farmed wild boar have reestablished themselves in some areas.

This is interesting, and most definitely a good thing.

Oh really! That’s cool. Greece still has bears and wolves too but I don’t know if they’ve seen an increase in recent years. I’ve never seen a wild boar, I hoped to see one when I’ve been on holiday in the forest of dean where they’ve got a foothold because my parents saw some a few years ago, but no luck. I’ve seen golden eagles in Greece before.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen anything that exciting in the wild. Watching Badgers at night through night vision was quite cool though. I worked with the National Trust for a year and would observe the sett with the ranger occasionally.

USA gun nuts entering this perverse lottery like :

Hope the bisons win tbh

The famed national park in Arizona is seeking 12 “skilled volunteers” to reduce the herd, which has grown large enough to cause environmental damage.

Mmm, I wonder if any other species has grown large enough to cause environmental damage?’

Shoot the fuckers wanting to shoot the animals.

Oh, don’t mind us. We certainly don’t have a grander plan.

I’m sure it’ll go really well:

My old boss when I worked at Manchester Uni wanted to reintroduce them to Rhum given the deer population is so high there that they have to be managed.

It’s a brilliant idea IMO but it’ll never happen when the interests of the landowners are so prominent. It’s taken long enough to get the idea of the White Tailed Eagle accepted, and that’s been a 30 year project.

Yes I agree. Heard lots of examples of people sabotaging bird of prey conservation projects because they might take game birds or the odd lamb, and an animal that could theoretically kill a human is a much harder sell.

I do think though that the Eagle, boar and beaver reintroductions will smooth off some of the issues. If you then look at something like lynx, that would be a brilliant next step. There was some talk of doing that up here in Kielder forest but not sure it got anywhere
