and @SenorDingDong I'm not suggesting they make it explosions or whatever, I just mean the film is couched in a very laidback way thanks mainly to the use of Matt Damon just being captain fatalistic. His character suffers a series of mishaps yet nothing really has edge.
A better comparison is to Apollo 13 - a film about an event where we all know they came back alive and fine, yet it's really tense and exciting. The Martian takes that concept and just gives it back like an episode of Columbo.
There's nothing necessarily wrong with that but I just don't think it makes for a really good film. You need a bit extra for that.
