Bob Stanley and Sainsburys

They’ve been selling vinyl in Tesco for ages

hope they’re pocket-money prices is all

Not a chance, I’d say.

I pal of mine did a tour of Sainsburys in north west England trying (with success) to track down a one-off limited pressing of Kylie Minogue - Fever which was exclusive to the shop.

And Sainsbury’s tbh tbf…

um Woolworths wasn’t a supermarket.

never said it was

must be just me reading it that way.

He was clearly referring to Woolworth’s in Oz tbh tbf…

Yeah, I can believe that! The Madonna ones are on eBay, Discogs etc Can only presume it’s non-UK collectors paying silly money for them. I picked up the Madonna Ray Of Light double album on blue vinyl, whilst queuing to pay at the till. It’s actually a very good pressing.

Yep the Kylie one is >£150 on Discogs. My pal is a Kylie fanboy so won’t be selling his!

‘Selling stuff people want to buy’ is the kind of shameless opportunism that has given supermarkets a bad name.

Have we had an all-purpose buying-music-on-Ebay/Discogs thread speaking of which? I feel this might be a good idea.

Haha! I get you. If it was food or drink would seem less opportunist - I’m just an old-fashioned type of guy…

I see where you made your mistake

my point though is that specialist record shops are part of the reason for the fetishisation of vinyl and are a bit exclusive & often quite unwelcoming for the casual/younger listener/shopper

not that I expect that to change much with this Sainsbury plan - wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t last much beyond Christmas - but I really don’t like the idea that records need to remain in some kind of niche

Seen “record store” vinyl stands in most big Sainsos these days
Fair enough

try buying anything remotely leftfield in HMV though, the shelves are stacked with shit. And as for record shops being unwelcome to younger shoppers, that should really be a thing of the past, they don’t deserve to be in business given how difficult it is to sustain a shop these days. Spillers in Cardiff is a good example, really relaxed and very helpful staff. Exactly how it should be.
