Want British Customs to do the same. I want a Ham War.

If you drive around Australia there are points between states where you have to drop any fresh produce, and that’s within the same country

Put down that cheese, you’re now entering WILTSHIRE

They have an honesty box out on the tarmac at the airport in Tasmania, and it only has flights within Australia these days

BBC News - Global health insurance card to replace EHIC under new rules

Excellent news. As my EHIC runs out next month, will definitely apply for this replacement.

We do have a gammon army

You’re not alone in thinking that (going off Google) but I don’t think it looks really much like her. I’d originally assumed it was Sally Phillips.

Background to it for any that care

Also within states you have restrictions on transporting certain produce like grape material into certain regions.

I thought it was julia roberts too

Is it actually global? From what I can gather in that article, it would function as before, just with a grander name. Is that right?

Yeah it’s like the 2nd link when you Google about the mene

I’ve got visions of people turning up at A&E in America, presenting their GHIC and being laughed at by the hospital staff.

Zygotic’s right that it’s good news that we’ve got continuity in Europe though.

Calling it global is definitely going to cause problems. Presumably they did this purely as they can’t bear to use the word European.

Amazed they agreed to do this tbh.

Are there any other Uk (or other) national, eu resident dissers here?

Trying to work out if I can get an ehic card. As an Irish resident I think I can but it’s really unclear. Nm, gonna send off for one anyway and see what happens.

I have to pay for health insurance as a Netherlands resident, and my health insurance card doubles up as an EHIC card (literally, on the one side of it are the account details of my private account, on the other the regular EHIC stuff).

As far as I can see, this GHIC is just for UK residents.

Who can get a GHIC

Residents of the UK

Entitlement to a UK GHIC is not based on your nationality.

The UK operates a residency-based healthcare system (the NHS), which means access is generally determined by residency and not by the past or present payment of National Insurance contributions or UK taxes.

If you’re ordinarily resident in the UK and not insured by an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland, you’re likely to be considered insured by the UK and will be entitled to a GHIC.

You’ll need to provide the necessary evidence when applying.

There are certain circumstances where you may be entitled to a GHIC or UK-issued EHIC despite living in an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland.

You are not entitled to a GHIC if you’re insured by an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland but live in the UK. You should contact the relevant authority in the country you’re insured by and request an EHIC.

No.

It is more limited than the EHIC, as the new GHIC is not valid in Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Currently it only applies to healthcare in EU countries.

UK nationals living in the EU, EEA and Switzerland and EU, EEA and Swiss nationals living in the UK, who are eligible under the Citizens’ Rights Agreement for reciprocal healthcare based on current EU regulations, can continue to apply for an EHIC.

From my reading of this page, you can’t unless you’re a EU citizen. Apply for an EHIC in Ireland - HSE.ie

You’ll need to get a GHIC instead - you’re entitled as a “Frontier worker” in Ireland who’s been there since 1st January this year.

Side note - I can see that it’s not equivalent to a EHIC as Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland are no longer covered.
