Far from stupid it was inevitable and fully understandable that Yugoslav republics would want full independence. Tito’s policy of market socialism allowed for individual republics within Yugoslavia to autonomously run their own economies free from the influence of Belgrade, which resulted in republics such as Croatia and Slovenia being far more prosperous than Serbia, and that carries onto this day.

It was inevitable that, at some point, individual republics, especially after Tito’s death in '80, would start to question why they couldn’t also have their own parliaments so that they could draft their own laws and be fully independent countries.

It would have been far more stupid to expect individual republics within Yugoslavia not to want to secede from Belgrade’s central authority.

Ethnic tension was always there, especially in regions such as north eastern Bosnia where they was, and still is, large populations of ethnic Serbs, who didn’t want to be part of an independent Bosnia.

To say that individual republics were stupid to vote for independence because of what happened in Bosnia is ridiculous. Were Slovenians wrong to vote for independence in '91 because of what happened in Kosovo in '99? Of course not.

You think those ethnic tensions that go back hundreds of years would have been supressed had Belgrade retained its control over all of the republics. No, and it could be argued that the war, that was largely confined to Bosnia, would have been far more widespread had Belgrade not allowed independence votes in Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro etc

there’s plenty of scholarly work that has exposed the idiot behind-the-scenes machinations of the people in power in the late-80s and early 90s to back me up on my central point, which is that the breakup of yugoslavia was at least as dumb as brexit and the idiot leaders att adopting fascist symbols and rhetoric and sending militias full of gangsters off to rape and murder their neighbours in the name of spurious notions of ethnic purity and independence was also very dumb. no idea why this is something you’d want to argue with, it’s an incredibly mild take.

but i think i’ve shown enough patience in the face of this weird condescension. like i am not in the habit of discussing subjects i don’t know anything about, you know? maybe chill the fuck out, idk.
