Went over this bridge two weeks ago. GBOB
What’s your stance on viaducts?
the worst possible type of bridge as you’re reminded how far away from the ground you are by plinths
Much sturdier though. Lovely pillars and/or arches, rather than a big span being held up by ‘science’.
We welcome sluices in this thread, for example, Zeesluis IJmuiden
If I vi a duct, I eat it!
This is the most famous bridge local to me
This is apparently the oldest bridge in Bristol and I walk over it a lot with my dog
Also Bristol means ‘place at the bridge’ but it’s not referring to either of these bridges.
Also also just realised that Bristol Bridge used to be over the River Avon (before the floating harbour and new cut) which means that it was the Bridge Place Bridge over the River River.
That’s the first one that sprang to mind for me, it’s great.
I like this one in Carrbridge too:
(Packhorse Bridge, built in 1717)
Doing a 5k on the forth road bridge later in the year
Got this article recommended
One of the best exhibitions I ever went to was the Living Bridges exhibition at the RA back in 1996
There was a ridiculously cool futurist 50/60s megastructuralist idea for rebuilding Köln (or maybe Frankfurt) with a single massive chrome building that streched across the landscape with inhabited megatubes going everywhere. Was well good. Never been able to find a picture of it since
It’s probably in the exhibition catalogue which I see you can get online for pretty cheap
Anyone wanna buy it for me?
Sounds like Neom
The Kingsferry Bridge to Sheppey
Great piece of early 50s brutalist design that we used to cross whenever we went to visit the family as a kid. My dad remembers getting a day off school to go to the opening.
It’s now been bypassed by a new bridge, but still carries trains and local traffic.
- Glasgow’s potential will be unleashed by this new bridge
- Glasgow’s potential will not be unleashed by this new bridge
- I am not well educated enough on the subject matter to vote one of the other options
The article is paywalled so yeah I don’t know
