Dis approved places include Burger Brothers, and Fatto a Mano Pizza. I think I’ve recommended Shelter Hall to people, which is great for the location and the food. You can’t come to Brighton without having ice cream, so if you’re in deepest Hove go to Maroccos, otherwise Boho Gelato will sort you out
Drink
The Basketmakers, obviously! But there are literally hundreds of pubs, so let us know where you’re staying and what kind of pub you like and I can make some better suggestions
Be mildly maudlin
There’s nothing like staring at the sea for that sort of thing
Sit with a laptop and work for some hours
There are plenty of co-working spaces around, but people sit in cafes for hours too. Pelicano round my way is always full of people with laptops. Other cafes are also available
Paso doble
Younger child-free Dissers are fans of the Traumfrau club night, but I think that’s just once a month? There’s always loads of gigs and club nights all over the place though
Gaze at
Wander
I said the sea already. There’s a nice undercliff coastal path that goes for miles from Brighton up to Saltdean, if you’re that way inclined. Otherwise get a bus up to Devil’s dyke and take in the downs from there. Or maybe go up to Patcham and take a walk to the Chattri. But the South Downs literally surrounds the town so you don’t need to look too far for a bit of greenery
Most of the pubs in the Lanes are a bit touristy IMO - go the other side of the main road into the North Laine and the pubs are much nicer. The Basketmakers, the Heart & Hand, the Great Eastern, The Pond, the Waggon & Horses are all great.
Oh, and steer clear of the King & Queen - despite appearances it’s not a Ye Olde Worlde pub (there’s very little in Brighton from before about 1750 - the French kept burning it down) and is mostly frequented by people wearing England shirts.
Oh, and avoid anything on West Street like the plague. Dreadful place.
drink - Great Eastern (lots of other good pubs very nearby if you want to do a crawl like basketmakers arms, evening star)
maudlin - Sit on the beach by the burnt down pier with a coffee
laptop - Brighton Library is nice if you can get a seat and you don’t need to be on calls. it’s in the middle of town.
paso doble - have a look on songkick or gigwise and you might find a decent club night, or check out whats on at green door store and komedia
gaze at - pier, burnt down pier, general seafront, North Laine, south lanes, Royal Pavilion and pavilion gardens, Brighton Pavilion Museum
Wander - most of gaze at applies here but if you fancy a proper walk you could consider:
doing the undercliff walk from Brighton Marina to Rottingdean, easy bus back or you can do a loop and come back atop the cliffs. Windmill and a pub and FnC shop at the other end.
South Downs, easy to get to by bus
Seven Sisters walk, this would be more like a day trip but the bus ride out there is stunning and the walk is spectacular.
This is excellent stuff, thank you! I’m not sure I’ll have time for some of the proper walks, but I want to find somewhere to head near the sea once every six weeks or so, and Brighton or Hastings are prime options - so this has been bookmarked
