From what I understand, the big Britpop bands were Blur, Oasis, Suede, Pulp, and Supergrass (and Radiohead if we count The Bends + OK Computer). Then a bunch like Elastica or The Bluetones or The Charlatans or The Auteurs or Gene who all sold fairly decently. Then there’s another tier below, bands who didn’t sell very well then or who don’t seem to be listened to much now if you go by metrics like LastFM or number of album ratings on RateYourMusic. These are the ones I’m interested in finding good songs by because I think there’s a lot of unexplored gems there.
I bought that Volume 9 from Select-a-disc in Berwick Street in 1994 the day before my A’Level results were due to arrive. Love that compilation. And yes, I’m old.
Apparently Blessed Ethel beat Oasis at some battle of the band thing (I think) if you like a bit of trivia.
those first 2 Jack albums are excellent and really should be heard by more people. Kind of midway between Suede and Tindersticks. Still listen to them a fair bit.
