basically did the same when I got my black VW. Those alloys look great

They were knocking 500 off if you took a model that was in stock in the UK so the alloys effectively cost us minus 300 quid

Wife’s new (heavily discounted, after I threatened to cancel it a few weeks ago) motor finally turned up last week. Looks trick.

Got the fancy bollocks digital cockpit so you can get the sat nav up on the dashboard and all that.

Surprisingly economical too, been getting around 65mpg on the run to work, which is really good considering it’s a brand new car.

Something very Jarvis Cocker lyrics about this.

Congratulations. Your new car looks new.

Reservoirs are good settings for car photos

And the car parks are just sublime for dogging.

So… I managed to flood our engine!

Yesterday I noticed the parking spots in front of our house were empty so I moved the car forward the 5 or 6 lengths from where we’d parked it the night before to in front of the house. When I left I smelt loads of petrol but just assumed it was normal.

Was about 15C, warmer in the sun, maybe about 7C overnight last night.

This morning my wife couldn’t get it to start to drive over to the park for exercise. The guy came and said the engine was flooded with fuel. I’d heard of this but only in reference to starting cars in the cold in the UK with ‘choke’ on and people pumping the accelerator, not something you do with an automatic…

But yeah, guy tells us that you shouldn’t ever do a tiny trip from cold like that. Go round the block to warm the car up if you need to move a tiny amount like that.

hi theo

since being in australia have you tried having a ‘carbeque’?

I don’t think so. I’m unclear what this could be: a mini bbq inside a car, a bbq you drive to, a bbq using only the heat of the bonnet?

I saw it on an episode of Neighbours once

Toadie, Conor and Stu wrapped up loads of meat in tin foil, popped it on top of the engine, then drove around the outback for a bit in the searing sun. Parked up somewhere nice, ate the now roasting hot meat from the tin foil.

Might have dreamt this.

My wife doesn’t recognise this but accepts it could be a thing.

Hey petrolheads of DiS!

We’re seriously considering buying a car in the near future. Three months of lockdown and avoiding public transport have taken their toll, and the thought of being able to drive down to my parents or go off to National Trust properties or whatever people do of a weekend is quite tempting.

Don’t really know how to go about it though. Aside from a battered old Ka me and my brother shared when we were teenagers (and I think technically it was my dads), I’ve never owned a car or had to buy one.

Ideally we’d want a compact four door - big enough for two car seats in the back and some luggage, but small enough to feel comfortable in London and park in on the street. Don’t want to be stressed about dings and stuff so I’m imagining second hand is the way to go. And cheap obviously.

Where do you even start?

Considered leasing? If you’re not gonna do many miles it’s a decent option

How cheap is cheap?

My partner recently bought a 2007 Ford focus for just over a grand. Does the job. Just used auto trader

Something like a Honda Civic or Ford Focus? Lots of both available - stick your criteria into Auto Trader and see what’s available. Maybe a Prius if you wanted to be more environmentally friendly. Probably want to aim for four or five years old and less than 50,000 miles.

So it’s like a phone contract, you pay each month then exchange it? Could work if the price is right

Yeah basically.

Don’t really know what the going rate is tbh, we don’t have a particular budget but don’t want to be ripped off or have exorbitant monthly costs
