caroline

it’s all a bit performative to me, without enough to back it up IMO, but i think that is clearly part of the appeal to others

btw never listened to Pretend before and this is great!

just stuck the new one on and I’m immediately absolutely loving it

so

I mean, don’t worry about it, guys

(can’t find the right sort of shrug to indicate the mood of my post!)

only as performative as any music is, badders

like, this is so much the sort of music I would be naturally compelled to make, and I can just tell that it’s as deep in their roots as mine

taps into my love of Dirty Three, Do Make Say Think, Boxhead Ensemble, even U.S. Maple…

sounding exquisite on headphones. amazing dynamic stereo mix, giving me Microphones too

sounds plenty cohesive to me :slightly_smiling_face:

low-key some Sigur Ros going on in here, anyone else pick up on that?

the brass at the end of ‘Song two’, and the vocal manipulation in ‘Tell me [etc]’ (even a bit Broken Social Scene towards the end)

‘When I get home’: the way there’s a techno tune existing next door to this spare post-rock (for a few mins) is like something I conceptualised on my Notes app in a fever ten years ago but never made :disappointed:

good, though

I think your strong positive reaction illustrates what I was trying to say. If caroline are for you …then they are likely really for you (and that’s obviously great for those who “get it”). Some of us are just left behind at that first hurdle. That isn’t to say it won’t click at some point, maybe through a random song or live performance.

no, I get you

I think it really tickles my fancy in a way that’s like… this emotional canvas stretched across a shifting conceptual wooden framework

it’s rippling with a sometimes soft, occasionally ripping wind, and the wind? that wind is also emotion

(had to sabotage the silly metaphor)

but yeah… it’s parts of songs loosely hanging in the same space, coming together and falling apart

Really enjoying this record - it’s been a little while since I connected with a post rock album (maybe it isn’t post rock) like this - but I love how it slithers all over the place and keeps you on your toes while not sticking around long enough to exhaust you.

I don’t think I will be going partly because I can already feel the need for a big rest this weekend but I’ll feel super remorseful about it cause this album is so fkn good

Really loving the new album, so had it on loads. Think I still prefer the first album as it was one of those albums that absolutely floored me when it came out and has a bit of a personal place in my head. But this is still great stuff.

Never heard of Pretend, but will rectify that today!

Really not getting into it, shame as I love the first album. Don’t think the space and beauty is there, and although the more chaotic stuff is a sound I’d generally like I don’t think they do it as well.
Won’t give up on it yet though.

Where should I start with Pretend?

Just listened to the Pretend album they have on Bandcamp and didn’t hear a lot of similarities personally, seemed much more ‘math’-adjacent for want of a better descriptor.

Thanks for the recommendation though, I enjoyed it!

Yeah, assuming that’s Tapestry’d Life, I’ve also just put it on and liking it, but hearing more a shared lineage than much direct influence.

You’re absolutely right, but I think they are both concerned with the formal aspects of music, and hover around the threshold of its syntax in an experimental way. Also, their voices are very similar, and there’s some guitar phrases which immediately put me in mind of certain songs too! But I sort of regret making the comparison now.

No, No! You shouldn’t! We’re all different, we all listen and hear things differently, and that’s cool!

Oh completely, I just feel like I’ve derailed things a bit and didn’t want to do that!

I was there too, it was a remarkable show.

I’d discovered them at EOTR. Had popped back to the tent for a nap and awoke to hear them from the Tipi Tent. Got up, wandered over to check them out properly, walked into the tent and they finished :joy:

I’ve enjoyed both albums, but neither have captured how special that Margate Caves show was.

I think this sums up my feelings about the two albums, although I do really like the second album. It is the space in the first one that I really love, the second one is definitely busier.
