Any idea what the Glasgow venue is?
Its part of Great Western festival
Might buy a Brighton ticket since I will (hopefully) be at Le Guess Who when she plays London.
So oran mor or hug and pint? Or some daft street?
Looks as in the past have also used QMU, Maryhill Hall and Mackintosh Queens Cross Church.
Same date as 65dos, shame
great that sheās playing in Bristol, wish I knew what the venue was! Her record is my AOTY so far, but I do worry that a big part of the appeal is the production and the sound with the variety of instruments etc, and I donāt know how thatāll translate live.
Bristol show is at the Louisiana, which is a lovely little room
Bit annoying that the London show is as support to Bobby Gillespie and Jenny Beth. Not sure Iām bothered about seeing them and paying the premium price for the privilege.
Bought a ticket for Brighton. Itās at the Green Door Store so handy for the train back to London.
Finally got round to getting this album, as itās just been reissued on vinyl. Itās a wonderful, wonderful thing isnāt it?
Mine arrived yesterday. Had a nice time just lying on the floor listening to it, such a lovely album. Hasnāt been bettered this year yet for me.
What I love about it is that it is a very elusive record - it sort of slips through your fingers before you can quite work out what it is. You start out thinking itās going to be a fairly conventional singer songwriter album and then it goes into unexpected places with the almost spoken word sections and the extended instrumental bits. At times it seems straightforwardly āconfessionalā but other bits are more diff to pin down lyrically. Itās a really excellent piece of work.
Ooh hadnāt realised it had been reissued, ordered myself a copy! Was annoyed to miss out on it last time
Iād be very happy if thatās the lineup on the Euro tour
Canāt stop watching this. So so lovely
Cassandra Jenkinsā An Overview on Phenomenal Nature emerged from the blue earlier this year. With pandemic unknowns and political upheaval leaving most at frayed ends, the New York-born musicianās assuring voice and expansive fresh take on songwriting created a much needed reflective space for listeners worldwide. As 2021 comes to a close, Jenkins revisits those flowing textures and refrains with (An Overview On) An Overview On Phenomenal Nature, a collection of previously unreleased sonic sketches, initial run-throughs, demos, and sound recordings from the cutting room floor that provided the scaffolding for what became one of this yearās most critically acclaimed albums.
When Jenkins visited Josh Kaufmanās studio this summer, they opened up their original sessions to uncover the ideas that were shed in the creative process. The new collection, (An Overview On) An Overview On Phenomenal Nature, isnāt merely a retrospective; it acts as a clear-eyed addendum as well as a compelling origin story, coming to life as a subconscious companion to the original album.
First takes of āNew Bikiniā and āHaileyā are born from opposite starting points; while āNew Bikiniā began as an airy alto meander, āHaileyāās origins lie in an upbeat dance track. On āCrosshairs (Interlude),ā Jenkinsā pitched vocal delivers a straight monotone, recasting the format as poetry with music highlighting her words, and āAmbiguous Norway (Instrumental)ā lifts the ambient nature of the mournful song into glimmering waves. The demo version of āMichelangeloā contains alternate lyrics āIām Michelangelo, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle,ā a lost contrast to the later verse where Jenkinsā likens herself to the sculptor. On āHard Drive (Security Guard),ā we join Jenkins as she listens to a passionate museum guard whose promised āoverviewā of the exhibit on view builds into a monologue of observations on art, politics, feminism and the human condition. This candid interaction evolved into the cornerstone and title of Jenkinsā album.
Before they decided to make an album together, Jenkins brought Kaufman a song called āAmerican Spirits.āThe dusky ballad takes us to the Texas plains via a voicemail from the payphone of a county jail (āMs. Cassandraā). Cassandra sings, āTime here burns through the sunsets / Like you and a pack of American Spiritsā over warm instrumentation with a vocal delivery that reinforces Jenkinsā unwavering tenderness towards her subjects.
(An Overview On) An Overview On Phenomenal Nature bookends Cassandra Jenkinsā musical output this year with nuance, coloring in the corners, and giving us another window into her ever-expanding world of chance encounters, experiences, and sonic textures. They glimmer like the sunās changing patterns on the wall as a new day gets going.
think this is more going to be a ānice to hearā than a must-listen, but Iāll be curious to check it out
