anyone have some tips for how i stop my boy scratching carpets? the previous landlord has taken us to the cleaners for carpet replacement, we really tried out best but mojo just doesn’t care about scratching posts/mounds/those carboard box things. he just loves scratching up the carpets :frowning:

Nope, our dickheads love a scratch of the carpet. Got them a selection of lovely posts but the side of the sofa, the (newish) landing and stairs carpet and the dining room chairs (now replaced with non-scratchables) are the favourites.

someone said spritzing his favourite bits of carpet with a little water and lemon juice might encourage him to use the post, but then i have to worry about mouldy carpet. perfume maybe? but i don’t want him getting sick or something.

We tried that. No dice.

Get a sofa that’s more expensive than the carpet?

This won’t be helpful to you now as it’s his paw that’s had surgery, but depending where the wound is sometimes you can put baby clothes on them. My colleague did that when his cat had stitches behind its front leg and it worked

gonna buy some doormats and slices of carpet, rub his paws on them, then put them in his preferred scratch locations #science

really enjoyed finding out that cats like to be let out only to come back in right away is due to them not understanding the concept of object permanence and believing that they’ve lost their territory to some unknown cat, only to have it reappear when you open the door, with the whole cycle repeating itself the next day.

Haha. Good luck with that.

My cat doesn’t understand that weather happens all round the house, so if she wants to go out and doesn’t like the weather at her cat flap, she’ll ask to be let out through the front door, decide she doesn’t like the look of it, try the patio door, repeat until it stops raining

Mog looked through her cat flap. It was raining in the garden.

Mog thought, “Perhaps the sun is shining in the street.”

UPDATE

Some positive times had with all three of them in the garden together this weekend. Did have to remove the badguy from under our bed at one point, and he did make a dash for the stairs another time - but generally he has been a bloody good laugh, and the honies don’t seem too fussed.

Well it used to be a neat pile.
