I would think Pavement would have a very different sort of sonic structure frequency wise; would be all low mids and mids, whereas the other stuff would probably have important stuff lower and higher. Maybe I’m wrong…

Yes, I was trying to work that out as well. I doubt very much an album would be deleted if a single from it is selling well. Maybe the other way around

The only thing I can think of is where an album is released, is not a hit. But then a single is released that is not on the album and is a hit. So they delete the original version of the album and then issue a new one with the hit added

Like It’s a Shame About Ray when they added mrs Robinson

Youre not wrong at all its just the guitars have enough melody to them and stepens vocals are prominent enough in the mix that it almost makes their music poppies vs listening to them on good cans/stereo

Think this is true for most indie rock bands. Find listening to 90s modest mouse a very different experience on a bad stereo to a good one. Almost more approachable!

No. So The album is out and selling in very steady small quantities due to reviews, etc.

All I Wanna Do starts to get radio play but is not a planned single at this stage. Maybe just Radio 2, one DJ playing it. Customers start asking, in notable numbers for the single, which has not been released. Polygram realise they are onto a winner and the album will be much bigger than they had maybe anticipated. Album is deleted so people cannot buy the album. Single is released and is a fair sized hit with chart longevity. Album is re-issued, exactly the same, but the public perception (generalising) is this is the new album, there’s maybe a tv campaign too, album goes platinum.

Songs for the Dead by QOTSA is pretty much designed for car stereos.

I’d also say anything deliberately brash and loud- Boris’s Pink, Dinosaur Jr’s You’re Living All Over Me, Sleater-Kinney’s The Woods…

We have a crap car stereo too, 90s rock is the only stuff that sounds good on it. Our normal rotation is Pearl Jam, Silverchair and the stone cold classic Jagged Little Pill.

Plus if you’ve got a wide vehicle the driver gets to appreciate Manzarek while the front passenger just hears Densmore.
