Yeah that makes sense. Had a quick look at it when googling and there were a few special editions which were snapped up also.

I wonder how many people who buy a special edition of a record like that are just memorabilia collectors for that artist, and how many are record nerds who want a sexy edition?

Over the last decade I’ve lived in 3 small cities (100-150k pop) and none have had record shops so pretty much exclusively buy online.

This has definitely been a thing with the ‘vinyl revival’ hasn’t it with the likes of Mondo and the audiophile pressings and all that. I don’t really understand that world tbh, and if someones ‘collectables’ turn out to be worth sod all I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.

Think Kylie just hit the right demographic at the right time for that release though

When I buy stuff online I try to buy from the websites of actual record shops in other towns. But obviously can’t resist an ebay bargain now and then.

Piccadilly are one of my go to places simply because I used to shop there many, many moons ago (including before they moved to the Northern Quarter).

Post brexit I’ve been trying to find a reliable shop close by but have failed so far.

Yeah as just someone who buys records this isn’t really something to worry about for me. The two cities I buy records in (Buffalo/Columbus) both have alot of record stores and they seem to be doing well ( for example opening more locations/ usually busy), bands I like are producing vinyl and they do it every time. So based on that ,unless they are insane , I assume they atleast breaking even on it.

If either the record stores or the bands stop making money on vinyl , then it’s upto them as it is any other business to pivot to something else. If/when that happens I’ll change with them. No real reason for me to lose sleep over it now. Things change , business change with it or cease to exist.

I think that’s the issue he’s raising, there’s a load of stuff being printed that nobody wants and it’s wasteful. Fuck knows if it’s true, but it is interesting

I did but I bust it.
P.S. looks like I didn’t have that minidisc player. I also found a pack of sealed MD’s at a booty for £2.

Back to cd shopping in 2021.

Abt 3 years ago I found a digital music player that completely transformed how I felt about digital music and as a consequence I was happy to sell/gift my cds.

If something (the odd compilation usually) was cd only release I’d buy that, digitize it and then sell/gift. I think this happened maybe a couple of times but I’ve found everything is now available digitally. Occasionally I’ll see a cd that tempts me but then I’ll think about how I’ll actually listen to it and realize there’s no point in getting it.

I’ve ended up with a few tapes because of Bandcamp and although I realize tapes are a silly format it’s a nice thing to have a small collection. CDs would be the same deal for me now so maybe I will end up with a few at some point if vinyl just becomes untenable for independent artists.

Now that all music is available digitally owning any physical format, along with hifi separates, does feel more like a hobby than just a way to listen to music. Not sure how I feel about that but I do enjoy having records so I’m always a bit torn on this stuff.

Also now I’d like a mini disc player so there is no logic.

I made this disc up in 2000, so there’s nothing from “The Argument” on there  also it still plays and sounds great.

How do you record onto it being a portable device?

With mine you used a digital optical cable from the CD player - obviously you need a CD player with a digital out

There’s a 3.5mm line-in port, but I used to have a minidisc/cd player combo back in the day which made things easier.

Love the idea of them self releasing this.

Later models of minidisc players could play mp3’s. But the programs to put the mp3’s onto discs are long gone. Maybe there might be some techy dude who has coded a new one ?

It looks like a little CD. From memory it was a square shaped thing you put in the player?

If CD had been 12" in size - and effectively physically digital vinyl, would we love it more?

Think you’ve just invented an audio LaserDisc mate :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Yeah, pretty much, and you handle these things roughly without worrying about wrecking the recordings.

Remember the one with a new Curve track on it, and waiting over a year for the bloody song to actually get released.

I don’t remember this. I do like the look of Mini Discs now though. Like a DAT tape but slicker. I looked on eBay and both blank and um, not blank Mini Discs themselves can get quite pricey.
