This is the correct version. It’s a second conditional which uses the past tense to express something unreal.
Glad that my English teaching experience is coming in handy.

Yeah, you’re right, ‘Final Straw’ was a slow burn as it didn’t start to pick up sales until ‘Run’ came out as the second single. The first single was ‘Spitting Games’ which didn’t even crack the Top 40 when it was first released. I always why a major label decided to pick them up after the first two records…maybe they heard the new material and thought they could shift some copies?
