What do you all do for food on Christmas night? When I used to go to my nan’s with all my family it was just turkey sandwiches, maybe a few leftover pigs in blankets and a pickled onion. We go round to the wife’s parents Xmas night now and her mom puts a buffet out with all sorts of nibbles alongside the leftovers. Don’t get me wrong it’s the highlight of Christmas, definitely a bit Tory though.

Also, I forget: Do you guys get like TV “Christmas calendar” shows? It’s a whole thing over here, shows with one episode each day of December up until Christmas. Used to be mostly a thing for kids back in the day but there’s lots of good ones for adults now as well. Normally a parody/satire type thing with a Christmas theme, obvs.

This Norwegian vegan blogger has made these things called “Vegisterkaker” which is kind of like little medallions or something made of rice, cauliflower and oats, with various spices etc – the main one being nutmeg for that Christmassy taste. I’ve made them every year for about 5 years and keep adding my own twists to it (last time I mixed in chili and bits of leek, for example), and make enough so that the rest of the family (non-veggies) can try some as a side as well. So I have that with a good sauce or veggie gravy and all the same sides as the others. Sometimes get some fancy veggie sausages or something as well, but don’t really need it.

We have a buffet but call it ‘supper’ generally served around midnight. Added port to finish…

What do you mean by Christmas Night? We traditionally start Christmas dinner around 7 and it’s not unprecedented for everyone to get so full and pissed that we end up having pudding the next day.

Genuinely blows my mind that most people seem to have Christmas dinner at lunchtime.

I always get on for the kids, and buy one for myself

About 7-8pm, I suppose. Having had Xmas dinner at about 2ish like every other normal person.

If you’re not having your dinner until that time, what are you having through the day?

Just been to pick my mum up from something. Love a church at Christmas.

I’d be sleeping propped up by half a dozen pillows if I ate at midnight!

Yep, mr s finds it very odd…is one of my favourite parts of Christmas though!! I sleep well full of cheese, crackers and mince pie. We do normally play cards etc after for a bit of digestion time!

Usually Christmas with family, then roughly every 2/3 years take an evening flight to Taipei to see the in-laws. Unfortunately for Bob Geldof and crew, they don’t really give much of a damn that it’s Christmas Time.

This year we’re skipping the whole thing and sitting around a swimming pool in Africa.

Me da works to 5pm so dinner happens at dinner time not lunchtime

The kids don’t get full pigs in blankets? Poor things :frowning:

Who has their tree up?

  • Yes, and if you’re doing it today you’re late
  • No, it’s still basically summer

We just did ours, wife is a Disney nerd so that features heavily. This ornament is guaranteed to make me burst in to tears at least once in the next month.

I mean I have my little plastic tree up but our family tree at my parents’ goes up on the 23rd

Don’t have a tree because I go back to my parents for Christmas and they have one, plus my housemate hates Christmas and the cat would destroy it within about 10 minutes.

Wifeo put it up last Sunday night while I was at work.

We’re a pair of miserable fuckers so we’ve only got this wee thing, along with the ‘nativity’.

And yes, that is a box of Christmas biscuits that’s already opened…

The nativity is perfect.

There’s a pack of Lindt elves (or dwarves or something) knocking about somewhere. The woman has tidied them into an unknown location though.

Disappointing lack of small festive chocolates around this year - it’s a shame those malteaser reindeer things aren’t foil wrapped.
