Cities spin-off thread

Places that are obviously just one place, but people from there inexplicably claim that they’re separate:

Manchester/Salford
Newcastle/Gateshead

I drove through Windsor the other day (spontaneous M4/ M25 traffic avoidance)

hardly a surprise but seems the like an absolute Tory motherlode of a place

it’s an empty threat TBH

I had absolutely no idea that they were so close.

I dunno. Guess it comes down to whether civic identity’s important or not. I’d consider Salford part of Manchester, but i probably wouldn’t if i was from Salford.

The boroughs around here are pretty fucked up. Places like Altrincham, for example, clearly Manchester, technically Cheshire, but if that’s the rule we’d have to take in, say, Oldham and Stockport as well, so probably for the best.

there does seem to be a rather significant road dividing them though

Farncombe/godalming

Egglescliffe
Eaglescliffe

There’s gotta be fields or something dividing them for at least half a mile or so.

I was once in Newcastle and was talking to someone who asked where we were staying, and I pointed at the hotel across the river and they said “oh, that’s Gateshead”. It was 200m away, its the same place.

Edinburgh is what Glasgow uses as a kind of holding pen for tourists.
