Taking a pram overseas is not an issue in itself as most (all?) airlines give you an allocation of child equipment free of charge. The other necessity will be a travel cot, but most hotels can rustle one of those up for you.
My main concern about traveling with a four month old would be that you won’t know what kind of feeding regime you’d be in at that stage. Could be early weaning or having to do formula feeds/accompanying sterilising, but tbh those early months are so random that you’ll need to cross that bridge when you get there regardless.
Destination - Hamburg’s Christmas market is excellent. The TV and I spent Christmas in Vienna (pre kids) and that was bloody lovely. If you did Eurostar it, Antwerp is very nice and only a short connection from Brussels.
We did Prague & Dresden (drove/ferry) in October last year when F was 6 months old and it was genuinely enjoyable. A few stressful moments but we had a great time. Wearing her in a baby carrier was super useful for busier areas but used the pram quite a bit too.
We were just starting to wean so just got some pouches, but she was predominently on formula at the time so took bottles, powder and used hotel kettles to make up bottles, and a bunch of ready to drinks for the ferry/car journey parts of our trip. Sterlising wise we used sinks and the tablets but if you have the travel tub even better.
I would recommend doing it, even at 1 now its trickier to travel with her than when she was 6 months!
I can also recommend either Prague or Dresden as being largely baby friendly too.
We did oslo for my birthday with our boy, who was not even 3 months yet. It was a lovely city to hang out in, bit expensive but we cooked meals at our apartment and tried to not push ourselves into going out all the time.
Also that trip was the first time he slept through the whole night without waking up once.
The trip was great vibes and I think was something we needed at that stage of parenthood as well…
When it comes to travelling with kids, the smaller the better. Pre-crawling is ideal. As soon as they start moving air travel becomes more of a pain (and once they’re two you have to buy them their own seat) so make the most of it now!
You can get prams that fold up to cabin baggage size (Yoyo and Colugo for example), for our second kid we’ve used a Colugo as our everyday pram and being able to fold it up for a plane is a nice bonus. If you have a different pram I wouldn’t splash out on a travel one specifically, will just be a bit more hassle to pack it up and check it at the gate.
As Petagno said, a travel cot is also useful but even the most portable ones are a pain to lug around. However most hotels can sort you out, you just might want to bring your own blankets and stuff, they often don’t have those (many a time we’ve used extra towels as pillows and sheets).
The one i had was a pop up one, was barely even noticeable in my luggage. But she was in bed with me anyway so didnt get put to much use but quote handy as the pop ups have mosquito nets on them. They’re really cheap too.
Christmas breaks I’d recommend are Strasbourg, Bruges or Dijon. All absolutely enchanting in the winter time and all reachable within a 3 hour train ride from Paris if you do the Eurostar - for both baby hassle & climate change reasons
As Scout and others have mentioned, a sling is your friend as a 4-month old is an eminently portable unit and to be honest the Christmas markets of Europe - cobbled & possible snow-covered - are not particularly suited to pram or pushchair navigation. I 100% recommend getting a Baby Björn. Strong, comfortable & very versatile. You can have baby facing you but you can also have baby facing front which, for a 4 month old, is great craic as you walk around galleries & stuff and feel their limbs wriggling in response to see all this new shit and their brainboxes going WOAH WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT. I know they’re pricey but they are worth it & have a good 2nd hand resale value or will last you when the time comes to port about the next wee one, and the next, and the next etc.
We took a travel cot with us on trips to Copenhagen & Paris when the 9yo was pre-toddler. It wasn’t too much of a hassle, a bit cumbersome, but they make much lighter ones now (for a price)
Have fun, it’s really great when they’re that age. Make the most of it because 2-4 years is nightmare travel time
Not trying to nitpick but I know from recent experience you’re not meant to have babies that young front facing in a baby Bjorn. Think they’re meant to be a minimum of 5 or 6 months
The guide book in ours was def in months. I think it’s because their necks might not be strong enough if they flip forwards potentially. facing towards you they’re supported both ways
We didn’t have much success with the Baby Bjorn (but it might have been the entry-level one). In the end, our sling of choice was a Tula. We are lucky in Plymouth to have a sling library, so you can borrow any kind of sling/carrier you like from there (think it was two weeks at a time). Once we’d borrowed the Tula a few times in a row, we decided to buy one.
We ended up with Tula too after some trial and error. Seemed to be the one that works best for us. Used it alot when in Europe last October and will take it when we travel again later this year as it goes up to about 3 years old i think.
