Has anyone else heard this new cover of the whole of Lou Reed’s Berlin that has been released today? He recorded it as a memorial to his partner who has recently died, and given that it is a famously depressing record you’d expect it to be dark but it’s completely the opposite- bright, sparkling and beautiful. The unexpected, joyful and bouncy version of Sad Song is particularly wonderful.

Knowing the album as well as I do it was a constant surprise and joy to listen to - he does something completely unexpected with almost every song.
I’ve never ever heard this album before. Do I listen to the Clint Mansell version or Lou Reed first??

Never heard of him but love Berlin. Nice one. I’ll definitely check it out.
Clint Mansell was in PWEI in the 80s (but don’t hold that against him) - he’s been a really successful soundtrack composer in recent years.
90’s PWEI were great!

Yeah I think it’s been recorded ‘in the style of’ his partner’s favourite bands - one track is a homage to New Order e.g.

I didn’t know that, but it makes sense. There’s definitely a track that sounds like Technique era New Order and a couple that sound like mid-80s Cure - it would be fun to try to identify the inspiration for other tracks. It’s not the gimmick that sounds like because it is done so skilfully and because the quality of the songs shines through.
