There’s a fair bit of love for Ed Sheeran and mainstream barbecue reggae [Black Seeds, Fat Freddy’s Drop etc]. One guy likes stuff like London Grammar, the XX. Guy who sits next to me knows all sorts of obscure stuff, a lot of Aphex Twin style techno, Japanese noise etc, sent me a link yesterday to an article where I’d only heard of one of the bands (Tinariwen). One woman about my age likes Pixies and the more mainstream indie type stuff. Could be worse.

Oh aye. Mogwai listeners notorious for their poor taste and general lack of interest in music…

Well, that can certainly be said for Mogwai musicians.

I would happily bet my life that none of my co-workers knew who he was

POLL:

Would you bet your life on one of your co-workers knowing who Jeff Mangum was (we’ll say their knowledge has to at least extend to recognising the name and knowing he was the singer in an indie band of soft men)

  • No, at least one person here is a bit indie and could probably hum along to Holland 1945
  • Yes, these twats would think he’s the guy who invented the ice cream

tbf, the last Manic’s album is their second best

Very hot take. In the sense that it is wildly incorrect.

I work with someone so incredibly indie not only is she fully aware of who Jeff Mangum is she thinks Neutral Milk Hotel are shit.

She’s in a self-described ā€˜avant-garde noise pop band’ at the moment. Probably more indie than all of us tbf.

You said would I bet my life on it so I put no

My work husband went to the cribs and the Maccabees recently but thankfully I went on opposing days to him so never bumped into him. He also went to the pidgeon detectives (I didn’t even know they were still going?)

The man opposite me is obsessed with depeche mode and only plays depeche mode at every possibility but he’s open to stuff and suggested I listen to Alt-J at glasto.

My boss is the states is really into Oasis

Everyone else, I have no idea.

Amongst the older lot, it’s very good and pretty varied. Guy I sit opposite just had an Electric Wizard record delivered.

We have music in the office on Friday though, but only the younger lot actually play stuff as the rest of us know our music isn’t really palatable for a working environment. So it’s basically like having Capital on. Get Galway Girl several times.

I’ve got one colleague who there’s a bit of overlap with. He’s seen Dinosaur Jr a few times in his youth but hasn’t been to a gig in years. I did get him into John Grant, though, so there’s that.

He does look at me a bit weirdly when I say I’m off to see Melt Banana or whatever, so I’m not sure if he thinks this music lark is all a bit daft now, or something.

A colleague who’s now left was a bit of a goth, into New Model Army and stuff. He was angry all the time and no one misses him.

Another colleague who’s now moved to a different department plays drums with Jowe Head (Swell Maps/Television Personalities).

A current colleague is into rockabilly and other '50s music.

One was a well known producer of ā€˜house’ music in his native South Africa and put together a number of albums.

The kid who does admin stuff for our department is drummer in a punk band called The Cavemen.

The department boss liked The Cramps (ā€˜when I was young and before marriage and kids stopped me from having fun’).

Of the other eight, I know nothing. Which probably means they listen to whatever crap is popular.

Just booked tickets for Shellac with colleague so not too awful.

My ex-(work)wife was into a lot of bluegrass, Old Crow Medicine Show and all those lads. She played the mandolin.

I work with Robert Plant’s sister-in-law so she’s into some pretty decent stuff.

Remembered last night that the programme director was lead singer of an Indie band when he was at Uni in Manchester in the early 90s. We did talk about music, briefly, and he was into Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, The Smiths, Inspiral Carpets, The Fall etc.

Last office I worked in was full of nice people, none of whom were really interested in music. There was one chap who liked Newton Faulkner, Jon Gomm and John Butler, that awful white boys with dreads and acoustic guitars genre. I enjoyed chatting with him but never wanted to hear that music.

To be fair, I’m not going to work to chat about music, I’m there to work. I’ll go home and chat about improv and jazz with my mates.

Used to work with a great bunch o’ musical lads and lasses. Making playlists for the office and other such bants. Now not so much. One girl’s well in to musicals.
