Oh meant to respond to this because it made me think about how cinema even now is, like computer games, a thing that holds attention. Obviously a few twats sometimes but I’ll sit and watch a film fully that at home I might not give full attention.
Partly maybe that paying directly for a thing is more captivating, partly that the darkness and audio aspect adds?
Equally in the 70s I guess watching films on TV was even less of a thing? So much less impressive, often cut and/or with ads, so full attention wasn’t always there.
I mean people have always complained that Apocalypse Now can be a bit boring and drawn out. I kind of think in the 80s and 90s people would actually just turn off/over when it got dull. Now someone would probably let Apocalypse Now run on while they checked a bit of Twitter, then drop back in once it picked up. Arguably a better situation?
