i think Coldplay have quite a few decent songs spread out across the first 3 or 4 albums, but their attempts to move into âparty bandâ territory on the last few has been unforgivable really, like some boring old dads trying to be cool. i know we all talked about their Glastonbury set last year being quite fun and all but they mainly just played terrible songs didnât they? remember really enjoying their 2005 set on TV and i feel like iâd enjoy it just as much if i watched it back now, probably - the X&Y stuff sounded pretty good live. i always thought they were like a band who want to be Radiohead but donât quite have the guts, so they come out with these little minor reinventions with every album but still largely sound the same reliably radio-friendly band, as if they want to try new things but are too afraid to really commit. if they break up iâd like to see the guitarist join a decent band cos heâs quite good and inventive when he wants to be isnât he?
i was a massive Oasis fan at 13 and i sort of rediscovered them recently when talking to a friend from mainland Europe about them, where they donât really carry that ubiquity or LAD following and are just another band really. made me go back and listen and realise how many great songs they had, particularly on the Masterplan which had always been my favourite at the time even though itâs a B-sides album. then i remembered Stewart Lee saying the same thing in an interview a while back, about becoming less of an indie snob as he gets older and getting really into Oasis suddenly. âitâs ridiculous not to like Oasisâ. even the last couple of albums have some good stuff on there, compared to the couple before. i still remember pretending that Shock Of The Lightning was shit when it came out even though i really quite liked it.
rarely stick on anything by either band but maybe i should a bit more often.
