I’ve done a bit of dinghy sailing and it’s great fun. It’s a great mix of physical workout and learning a bit of theory, with the option to do it either recreationally or competitively.
I think the image of sailing is tainted somewhat by yacht sailing which obviously can be quite expensive and elitist, but dinghy sailing can be done relatively cheaply (the club I was at charged £90 annual membership which included free use of the club’s boats). Also dinghy sailing tends to attract roughly equal members of men and women as well as a sizeable proportion of young people. There’s something very… humble and rootsy about it that I think would appeal to some people on here.
A lot of clubs will be holding a Push the Boat Out day this month where members of the public can go along and give it a go.
